The main research program includes studies on the molecular epidemiology and pathogenesis of pneumococcal infections, from the clinical side to more basic approaches looking at host-pathogen interactions. In our group, you will be able to gather knowledge ranging from basic microbiology, bacterial regulatory systems and immune response of the host to epidemiological and clinical studies.

Your mission

We are looking for a temporary position approximately 25% to work primarily on the construction of fusion proteins from pneumococcus, to express them in E. coli and S. pneumoniae. This project will focus mainly on characterization of protein variants as vaccine candidates and genetic manipulation of S. pneumoniae for vaccine platform. Technologies include work on Streptococcus pneumoniae such as bacterial cell culture in BSL2, genomic DNA and plasmid extraction, PCR, mutant construction, expression of tagged proteins, microscopy, ELISA, flow cytometry. Maintaining a lab notebook with thorough and organized data, as well as oral and written communication of the results will be required.

Your profile

The successful candidate is preferably a MSc level student, with specialization in microbiology, looking to complement their studies with a short lab project. We are looking for someone with an understanding of microbiology theory and previous laboratory experience working with bacteria, especially growth and culturing, purifying genomic and plasmid DNA, PCR techniques, SDS-PAGE and Western blot, cloning and creating bacterial mutants, biochemical methods and immunological including ELISA, microscopy imaging, flow cytometry.
