The Eukaryotic Single Cell Genomics facility (ESCG), is looking for a highly qualified Research Specialist.
ESCG is a core facility at Karolinska Institutet and a national facility at Science for Life Laboratory (SciLifeLab). Based at SciLifeLab in Stockholm, the focus of ESCG is on high throughput streamlined transcriptome and genome analysis of large numbers of individual eukaryotic cells.
As a Research Specialist in the role of Team Leader, you are responsible for daily planning of ongoing activities in the team to ensure that we can deliver high-quality data to our users with the best possible approach and tools. In the role of team leader, it is expected that you coach and motivate the group of 5 research engineers and research specialists to work towards ESCG’s set goals. The group's tasks are primarily focused on the construction of RNA and DNA sequence libraries from single-cell suspensions using state-of-the-art technologies. We achieve these goals by continuously updating our operations in line with the latest breakthroughs in our field. The person we are looking for will ensure that we achieve the quality goals we set.
Our first priority and highest goal is to deliver high quality data to our users. We achieve this goal by ensuring that methods and sample flows are the best possible for the task. A further objective is to ensure that internally developed methods become publicly available to the larger research community. The position entails staff responsibilities. Documentation, communication and team spirit are important for us to achieve our goals, and we are therefore happy to see that the applicant fits these key words.
You must delegate and schedule the group's activities and manage the day-to-day activities of ESCG’s operations. Furthermore, you should motivate and coach members of the group in research-related issues. You will need to communicate and discuss results with researchers and companies and conduct meetings together with team members.
Other tasks may include project coordination, user consultations, cost calculations, invoice preparations, development of laboratory protocols (SOPs), procurement, ordering, shipments, inventory, risk assessments.
In addition to your team leader responsibilities, you will also contribute to some extent to laboratory activities. You will handle delicate primary cell samples, fragile RNA and sensitive instruments on a daily basis.
Your lab responsibilities will include all aspects of running single-cell methods, RNA-isolation and sequencing library construction, microscopy, image analysis, quality control, trouble-shooting. Methods include Smart-seq3 protocol, Chromium system from 10x Genomics and custom protocols. Additionally, you will operate liquid handling robots, qPCR/PCR, and Bioanalyzer instruments. Your work may also include to implement new single-cell methods at the facility.
You are service-minded and enjoy learning new methods. You are thorough, flexible, diligent in your laboratory work and proficient in work documentation. The position requires being able to work independently as well as in collaboration with others. You are able to work with several projects in parallel. You will work in an international team with frequent interactions with customers, therefore clear and informative communication skills, general computing proficiency, and a good knowledge of English are essential. Strong interpersonal skills will be highly valued.
To be eligible for employment as a Research Specialist, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated research expertise as well as have documented research experience after defending their doctoral dissertation.
