Do you want to contribute to improving human health?

The research at the Division of Molecular Metabolism aims at understanding the regulation of mitochondrial function and the role of mitochondrial dysfunction in disease and ageing. Using patient material and different animal models, our overall aim is to get insights into disease pathophysiology and to develop novel treatments. We are currently looking for 1-2 highly motivated postdoctoral researchers, to join the research group of Nils-Göran Larsson

Your mission

To study the role of mitochondrial function in health and disease. Mitochondria are essential for cell function and mitochondrial dysfunction has been implicated in a variety of hereditary diseases, age-related diseases and the normal ageing process. Using mouse models, biochemistry, molecular biology and modern -omics approaches, the group of Nils-Göran Larsson focuses on understanding molecular processes determining how mitochondrial function is regulated and the role of mitochondria in ageing and disease.

Your profile

Applications are invited from enthusiastic and motivated individuals with a PhD in molecular biology or genetics. Experience in mitochondrial research is not required, whereas experience in biochemistry, molecular biology, mouse genetics and different -omics methods is of advantage. Candidates with a background in bioinformatics are also of interest. Good documentation skills as well as proficiency in both spoken and written English are required. The successful candidates should be able and willing to work in a team to pursue his/her research. Personal suitability is of great importance when evaluating the applicants.

Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) date of employment. This must be substantiated by the applicant's main supervisor, director or equivalent.

The Division

The Division of Molecular Metabolism, Deparment of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics, is located at the newly built and modern laboratory Biomedicum at Solna campus of Karolinska Institutet. Our research encompasses biochemical and genetic studies of patients with inherited diseases as well as basic scientific approaches to understand the regulation of mitochondrial metabolism. Patient material (tissues and cells), genetically modified fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster) and mice (Mus musculus) are used in our studies. We offer an outstanding research environment and a close interaction between basic science and clinical science and diagnostics at the Centre for Inherited Metabolic Diseases (CMMS) at Karolinska University Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden. Excellent access to the most advanced resources in molecular and cell biology is available at the department and at the national core facilities at the Science for Life Laboratory.

Entry requirements

Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.
To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post doctoral education.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Location: Solna

Type of scholarship

The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

Application process

An application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  • A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis (max 2 pages)
  • A complete list of publications
  • A personal motivation letter, explaining your research interest (max 1 page)
  • Contact information of at least two references

The application is to be submitted on the Varbi recruitment system.
