The Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics conducts research in epidemiology and biostatistics across a broad range of areas within biomedical science. The department is among the largest of its type in Europe and has especially strong research profiles in psychiatric, cancer, reproductive, pediatric, pharmaco, genetic, and geriatric epidemiology, eating disorders, precision medicine, and biostatistics.

Part of the success of our department is due to our collaborative spirit. Researchers at the Department share and co-finance common resources (e.g., IT and an applied biostatistics group). Description of the subject area

Epidemiology is the study of the distribution and determinants of health-related states and events in human populations. Research at MEB builds on the unique Swedish strengths for epidemiological research, including a long tradition of using individually linked health registers and biobank collections.

Your mission

The department is looking to recruit an epidemiologist considered a world class researcher in any area of epidemiology. The successful candidate will be expected to stimulate and develop the department’s activities in his/her area of epidemiology.

The employment has a focus on research. We assume the successful candidate will continue to conduct research within his/her established research area, but also explore new research opportunities. Supervision of doctoral students and some teaching in the department's undergraduate and/or graduate programs is expected. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to academic leadership and engage in the development of epidemiology as a research area, as well as the development of the department and Karolinska Institutet. Depending on professional background, it may be possible, subsequently, to combine the employment with clinical duties.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for an employment as Professor with focus on research the applicant must have demonstrated good pedagogical expertise and excellent scientific expertise (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet: https://ki.se/media/40484/download).

Assessment criteria

The Professorship has a focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: scientific expertise (3), pedagogical expertise (2), and leadership, development and collaboration expertise (2).

For employment as Professor at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure 3.1.1 are applied in relation to established profile of employment.

It is particularly meritorious that the applicant has:

• Conducted, during recent years, research of high quality in epidemiology and demonstrated the potential to continue to conduct research of high quality.

• Published, in international journals, high-quality peer-reviewed research in epidemiology, during recent years, and occupy a prominent place in the list of authors.

• Been the principal recipient of funding for research in epidemiology, granted in national or international competition, during the last seven-year period and have the potential to secure further funding.

• Documented leadership experience.

The applicant shall also have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education (or have equivalent competence), as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution. If the person appointed for the position is lacking such education at the time of the employment, the appointee must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
