Karolinska Institutet,

- with focus on research

Do you want to contribute to better health for all?

The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 520 employees and a revenue 2021 of 483 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna. Aging Research Center (ARC) (https://ki-su-arc.se), a division within NVS, is located at KI Campus Solna, Stockholm.

ARC is a multidisciplinary academic environment, representing medicine (e.g., neurology, epidemiology, psychiatry, geriatrics), psychology (e.g., cognition, structural, functional, and molecular brain imaging), and social gerontology (e.g., sociology, public health, social epidemiology, social work). The center has around 70 employees, it has a strong focus on research with unique research resources, such as large-scale longitudinal studies and a national infrastructure for aging research (NEAR).

Description of the subject area

Epidemiology of aging investigates the aging process, the longevity patterns, and the geriatric syndromes such as dementia, multimorbidity, frailty, and functional disability. As populations have been aging rapidly, both in Sweden and globally, these conditions are posing huge public health challenges to almost all societies. Strategic research areas in geriatric epidemiology include 1) the development and distribution of chronic diseases among older adults and their variations over time, by geographical areas and socio-economic groups; 2) the identification of primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention strategies to reduce adverse functional outcomes (e.g., physical disability and dementia) in older adults; 3) the detection of clinically relevant associations between different organ-specific diseases such as cardiovascular diseases with mental disorders and dementia; and 4) optimisation of treatment and care of older persons.
