Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

Do you want to apply your skills as a frontend, backend, or automation developer towards establishing a platform for trustworthy external evaluation of AI algorithms applied to breast cancer imaging?

In collaboration between Karolinska Institutet, Lund University, Linköping University, and the Swedish Breast Cancer Association, a project is underway aiming to establish a national platform for validating and evaluating the accuracy and reliability of commercial and academic AI algorithms in the detection and diagnosis of breast cancer based on mammography images. The project is VAI-B (validation of AI in breast radiology) and is funded by the Regional Cancer Centers in Collaboration and Sweden’s Innovation Agency, Vinnova. The goal is for VAI-B to provide a trustworthy external evaluation of AI algorithms. Our research group is part of the Department of Oncology and Pathology at Karolinska Institutet, and the research leader Fredrik Strand is a breast radiologist at Karolinska University Hospital.

We are looking for up to three hands-on research engineers to automate how new AI companies connect to our platform, to manage and improve the database, and to develop an interactive web app where hospitals and AI companies can explore how the algorithms are performing.

Your mission

As a frontend engineer, you will develop the interface to explore the performance of the AI algorithms. You will be in close contact with the users of the platform, hospitals and AI companies, to maximize the insightfulness of the platform. There is space to be creative as our current UI is PDFs

As a backend & data engineer, you will design and develop the API that interfaces the database and the UI. And you will maintain and improve the database.

As an automation engineer, you will work on automating how new companies connect and test their AI models. Following best practices, you will improve the speed and stability of the platform.

Your profile

For backend and data engineering, we’re looking for candidates with experience managing NoSQL databases, crafting APIs, analyzing and constructing datasets, and implementing data analysis techniques, preferably in python.

For frontend engineering, we’re looking for candidates with experience building web UI’s from the ground up. The perfect candidate has excellent attention to the user experience and has previously worked with data analysis UIs.

For automation engineering, we’re looking for candidates with experience in setting up cloud infrastructure, dealing with containerization, and implementing CI/CD workflows.

Depending on your skill set, the scope of your role may include tasks from more than one of the above-described areas.

Candidates with experience building software products or developing academic research projects are of particular interest. Showcasing previous work is encouraged.

Applications from all countries are accepted. We expect candidates to have excellent communication skills both in written and spoken forms. Our working language is English, but knowing Swedish is a plus given that we must deal with national hospitals and stakeholders.

If you want to contribute to creating a more transparent and fairer world of AI algorithms for breast cancer, we will be delighted to receive your application!
