The Department of Biosciences and Nutrition performs research and education in several areas of medical science including aging, Alzheimer, bioorganic chemistry, biomaterial, molecular endocrinology, cancer biology, functional genomics, systems biology, epigenetics, structural biochemistry, immunology, and nutrition. It offers an excellent international research and working environment, including around 250 scientists, students, administrative and technical personnel. The Department resides in Neo at Campus Flemingsberg, a biomedical research building, aimed at being a creative and open environment that enables meetings, synergies, and exploration of areas of mutual interest across disciplines.

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The position will be placed in the laboratory of Professor Eckardt Treuter which conducts pre-clinical research at the crossroads between epigenomics, metabolism, inflammation and disease. The laboratory is located at the Department of Biosciences and Nutrition, an excellent international research environment performing research in key areas of biomedical science, hosting around 250 scientists, students, administrative and technical personnel.

Your mission

You will join our efforts to characterize the function of transcriptional regulators in atherosclerosis, with an emphasis on epigenetic alterations in macrophages and hepatocytes that potentially link type 2 diabetes and liver steatosis/fibrosis, respectively, to the development of cardiovascular diseases.

We will assess the suitability of candidates using the following criteria:

  • Handling, manipulation and characterization of atherogenic mouse models.
  • Design procedures involving above atherosclerosis models.
  • Writing ethical applications to conduct animal experiments.
  • In vitro analysis of human monocytes, macrophages and hepatocytes
  • Generation and analysis of CUT&Tag/ATAC/RNA-sequencing data, batch and single cell approaches.
  • Preparation of manuscripts and grant applications.
  • Supervision of undergraduate and PhD students
  • Organization of laboratory routines, safety issues and chemical register

Assessment criteria

It is particularly meritorious that the applicant has shown prior experience in generating and characterizing transgenic mouse models; prior knowledge and understanding of metabolism, inflammation, tissue crosstalk, liver and macrophage biology, cardiovascular disease pathways, from mouse to humans; prior experience in the analysis of gene expression pathways, genomic and epigenomic profiling, virus delivery systems, in vitro culture of cell lines and primary tissues, bone marrow-derived macrophages and blood-derived monocytes.

It is additionally meritorious that the applicant has shown prior experience in any of the above outlined specific duties required for this position (e.g. lab management, supervision, publication and application writing, scientific collaborations).

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
