The department of clinical sciences, Danderyd hospital (KI DS) was established in its current form 1993. Annually, about 400 students undergo their basic medical training at KI DS. The department conducts clinical research in several different areas. The department has about 90 registered PhD students and annually about 10 defend their dissertations for a doctoral degree in medicine. Approximately 250-300 articles are published annually in international peer-review journals. Extensive commissioned research is also ongoing. The department annually provides several courses for specialist competence in various subjects as well as further education courses for specialists and postgraduate courses.

Danderyd Hospital is one of Sweden's largest emergency hospitals and conducts medical care across 10 operational areas, of which 8 are university hospital units. Annually, the hospital takes care of about 90,000 emergency patients, 429,000 outpatient visits, and 50,000 inpatient admissions. Internal medicine is primarily practiced at the Department of Medical Specialties.

Description of the subject area

Internal medicine is a part of the Department of Medical Specialties at Danderyd Hospital,and has clinically a focus on acute internal medicine. In the research field, there are currently three research groups focusing on hemostasis, immunology, and microcirculation.

Your mission

The position entails overarching responsibility for a term course within the medical program. You will be responsible for the course Medical Diagnostics and Basic Scientific Integration in the 6-year medical program, but other educational elements may also be relevant. You will also conduct research on internal medicine diseases at the department. An important part of the work will be to develop and communicate academic leadership in education and research within the current operational areas. You will also collaborate with other departments within Karolinska Institutet and with various operations in the region.

The position is combined with a role as a specialist-competent physician in internal medicine at the Department of Medical Specialties at Danderyd Hospital, where clinical experience and knowledge are highly valued for organizing clinical training and research effectively. The appointment is intended to be divided with 51% as a lecturer at KI DS and 49% clinical work at Danderyd Hospital as a specialist competent physician.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for an employment as senior lecturer with focus on education and research the applicant, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD or having equivalent scientific expertise, must have demonstrated excellent pedagogical expertise; good scientific expertise; and clinical expertise (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).

You should have extensive experience in education, such as teaching and examination.

You shall also have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education (or have equivalent competence), as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution.

The appointment will be combined with clinical service as a specialist-trained physician in internal medicine at Danderyd Hospital. Therefore, applicants must hold a medical degree and specialist competence in internal medicine and meet the National Board of Health and Welfare's requirements for practicing medicine in Sweden. Given the hospital's significant emergency responsibilities, documented experience and competence in acute internal medicine and intermediate care is required.

Since the employment includes clinical work, you must, besides English, demonstrate proficiency in Swedish, Norwegian or Danish (C1 level according to the common European reference scale, CERS).

Assessment criteria

The employment has a focus on education and research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: scientific expertise (2), pedagogical expertise (3), leadership, development and collaboration expertise (2) and clinical expertise (2).

For employment as senior lecturer at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure are applied in relation to established profile of employment.

It is particularly meritorious that you can demonstrate:

  • Course responsibility within the medical training.
  • Competence to act as senior specialist on call within acute internal medicine and
    intermediate care
  • Experience in leadership roles within education.
