Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics (MEB) is among the largest departments of epidemiology in Europe with special focus on increasing our knowledge of the aetiology of different diseases. Our department consists of researchers, doctoral students, biostatisticians, data collectors and database administrators as well as administrative personnel, in total some 250 staff. The department is situated at campus Solna. Further information can be found at ki.se/meb

Description of the subject area

The primary research area involves integrating large-scale genomic data and nationwide electronic health records 1) to investigate long-term outcomes of major depression; and 2) to compare treatment outcomes in patient subgroups of major depression.

The secondary research area involves causes, consequences, and comorbidity between asthma and other diseases in large population-based studies. Unique resources at the department – such as the Swedish Twin Registry, data from the national health-, sociodemographic- and quality registers and novel analytical methods and innovative study designs – are effectively utilised.

Your mission

We are looking for a highly motivated and self-driven person, specialized in register-based and genetic epidemiology to join our team and work on consequences of major depression and asthma. The majority of the research specialist’s role involves planning and carrying out research within our research group, where you will work with generating research questions, data collection, data processing, statistical analysis and programming, as well as compilation of results and article writing. Furthermore, you will be responsible for the coordination of projects and guiding students in the lab if the need arises.

Eligibility requirements

The applicant should have a PhD degree in epidemiology or genetics. It is required that he/she has previous experience in register-based and genetic epidemiology, i.e. working on national health register linkage data from the National Board of Health and Welfare and other quality registers, and knowledge of analysis of complex omics data [e.g. genome-/epigenome-wide association study (GWAS/EWAS)]. The eligible applicant should also demonstrate some expertise in sibling comparison and classical twin designs or applying principles of randomized trials to observational studies and has experience in supervising students.

The applicant should be highly collegial, experienced in working in “team science” contexts, possess exceptional communication and organizational skills, know how to successfully multitask, and should be able to describe past examples of having developed structured approaches to solving unanticipated and complex problems.

Individuals eligible to be employed as a research specialist should have completed their PhD studies for at least five years and demonstrated research experience after defending their doctoral thesis. Having at least one publication as a senior author and very good knowledge of English, both oral and written, is a requirement. Some knowledge of Swedish is desirable.

Assessment criteria

Scientific skill in register-based epidemiology in respiratory medicine or psychiatry is the most important assessment basis. The applicant must also have documented experience in project management and statistical analysis work. In addition, personal qualities such as cooperation, flexibility, independence, a structured way of working and problem-solving analytical skills is very important.

It is required that the applicant has

  • Experience of register-based epidemiology as well as consortium-based GWAS/EWAS on relevant health outcomes
  • Experience in data processing of large register data sets and advanced programming with SAS and/or Stata
  • Knowledge and practical skills of epidemiological study designs with consideration on the causal inference
  • Practical implementations of classical twin design using OpenMx and of other novel post-GWAS analyses
  • Experience of supervising students as main or co-supervisor
  • First and last authorship on scientific articles published after the dissertation

It is meritorious that the applicant has shown

  • Experience of presentations at international scientific conferences
  • Experience of national and international research collaborations
  • Pedagogical experience from teaching

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
