The Department of Laboratory Medicine consists of seven divisions and is active in many areas of Laboratory Medicine. The department is involved in advanced basic scientific, clinical and epidemiological research. The Division of Pathology is a part to the Department of Laboratory Medicine. The division is closely linked to the Clinical Pathology and Cancer Diagnostics unit at the Karolinska University Hospital and conducts high-quality preclinical and translational pathology research with focus on cancer, inflammatory diseases, and regenerative medicine.

Description of the subject area

Researchers and teachers within the Pathology division participate in a majority of KI's educational programs in medicine, biomedicine, biomedical analysis, dentistry, nursing, and doctoral education, where they teach students in pathology, pathophysiology, immunopathology, and cytology.

Your mission

We are seeking a Senior Researcher who will contribute to and develop translational cancer research within our division with focus on intracellular signaling mechanisms and metabolism. Specifically, we are interested to strengthen our expertise on signaling mechanisms regulating cell survival, organelle turnover, autophagy and other related processes. The applicant is expected to establish a new research area at the department including development of cutting-edge technologies in imaging and cell signaling. The applicant is furthermore expected to organize and teach courses at both basic and advanced levels at the department.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as a Principal Researcher, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated research expertise. The applicant must also be a Research Leader and have established their own line of research. The applicant should furthermore have shown documented, high-quality scientific production, particularly in the last six years and have the potential to energetically drive their research forward as well as be recognized nationally and internationally. The applicant should also have obtained good, long-term and preferably external funding and have the potential to obtain further external funding. The applicant should also have documented teaching experience in supervision of PhD students and teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and demonstrated good leadership qualities.

Assessment criteria

For employment as Senior Researcher at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria stated in the Rules regarding other positions than teaching positions are applied in relation to the established profile of employment.

For the position, it is required that the applicant has:

  • An established research line in the field of cancer cell signaling with high quality peer-reviewed publications in high-ranking scientific journals
  • A proven track record in driving research projects and attracting external funding
  • Teaching experience for undergraduate and postgraduate students
  • Excellent ability to communicate in English (written and oral)

It is meritorious that the applicant has shown:

  • Experience in developing innovative approaches to study cancer cell signaling
  • Expertise in mTOR signaling
  • Expertise in cell metabolism including organelle turnover and autophagy
