The Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology (MTC) at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm conducts research and teaching in infection biology, immunology, cell biology and cancer. Our keywords are interdisciplinarity, clinically based basic research and national and international cooperation.
The research group of Dr Claudia Kutter seeks a Postdoc (either computational or computational/experimental) in the field of functional genomics and RNA biology. The Kutter lab has a track record in deciphering molecular mechanism by which RNAs (i.e. long noncoding, transfer and small RNA) regulate genes and genome structure in mammalian somatic tissue and in the germline (Geng et al. Genome Research 2022, Søndergaard et al. Gut, 2022, Gao et al. Genome Research 2022). As a Postdoc you will be part of a multidisciplinary and collaborative research team active within the fields of chromatin and RNA biology, functional and/or comparative genomics. As a member of the Kutter lab, you will apply, optimize and integrate novel transcriptome-wide approaches (based on single cell RNA-sequencing) to study transcript regulation using data obtained from mouse studies and patients. This project focusses on the roles of regulatory RNAs.
The Kutter lab interrogates genome- and transcriptome-wide regulation and functionality by employing a combination of next generation sequencing technologies (both bulk and single-cell) and high-throughput genetic screening approaches, develops computational methods, along with applying experimental techniques. The group uses an integrative and collaborative approach, works closely with computational and experimental groups at KI, Science for Life Laboratory (SciLifeLab), and other local and international research groups. Frequent courses are provided on campus. Additional professional training is available through summer schools and recurrent workshops.
The laboratory is located at SciLifeLab on the Karolinska Institute campus in Stockholm. SciLifeLab offers an attractive research environment, provides state-of-the-art instrumentation and core facilities, and is home to the second largest sequencing cluster in Europe. SciLifeLab is a joint effort between Karolinska Institute, the Swedish Royal Institute of Technology, and Stockholm University. It hosts research groups with diverse backgrounds and expertise, creating a unique interface between basic biology, genomics, bioengineering, drug discovery, and translational medicine.
Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence. It is considered as an advantage if you have completed your doctoral degree within the last three years, if there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) date of employment. This must be substantiated by the applicant's main supervisor, director or equivalent.
A strong background in genomics, computational biology, and/or statistics as well as experience in high-throughput sequence and gene expression data analysis techniques is essential for the position. Excellent skills in programming (primarily Python, R/Bioconductor, UNIX), knowledge of biological databases and data integration as well as data visualization is required. As a Postdoc you will take a strong lead in the project design and management as well as data generation, analyses, and interpretation, participate in the general duties of the team and collaborate with other team members. You are expected to report the scientific results leading to scientific manuscripts, attending scientific meetings, and effectively communicate with peers. The ability to work in a highly interdisciplinary and international environment, and to engage in continuous professional development is a must.
A creative and inspiring environment with wide-ranging expertise and interests. Karolinska Institutet is one of the world's leading medical universities. At Karolinska Institutet, we conduct successful medical research and hold the largest range of medical education in Sweden. At KI, you get to meet researchers working with a wide range of specialisms and methods, giving you ample opportunity to exchange knowledge and experience with the various scientific fields within medicine and health. It is the crossover collaborations, which have pushed KI to where it is today, at the forefront of global research. Several of the people you meet in healthcare are educated at KI. A close relationship with the health care providers is important for creating groundbreaking top quality education and research. Karolinska Institutet is also a state university, which entitles you to several benefits through our collective agreement.
