Your mission

The research group of Associate Professor Dr. Federico Iovino, which is now seeking a postdoctoral fellow, is the only group at Karolinska Institutet performing research on bacterial infections of the brain. Permanent neurological disabilities in both children and adults are often caused by bacterial infections of the brain, and these are due to a damage of neurons caused by the infection. By knowing the molecular mechanisms regulating bacterial interactions with neurons, Dr. Federico Iovino’s group aim is to establish new therapeutic approaches to block bacterial-neuron interaction to prevent neuronal damage.

Suitable candidate should possess excellent capabilities of project management, solid knowledge of clinical microbiology, bacteriology and neurobiology, good experience and knowledge in: 1. Cell culturing of neurons of human and mouse origin, 2. Molecular bacteriology (Streptococcus pneumoniae), 3. Microscopy, in particular confocal microscopy. Importantly, good candidates should possess certified skills of Laboratory Animal Science (Felasa).

Your profile

Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence. It is considered as an advantage if you have completed your doctoral degree within the last three years, if there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier.

Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) date of employment. This must be substantiated by the applicant's main supervisor, director or equivalent.
