The Department of Laboratory Medicine consists of seven divisions in which both research and teaching are carried out. The department is involved in advanced research in both basic and applied research. All departments operate in close contact with clinicians at Karolinska University Hospital. The Department of Clinical Microbiology studies disease processes in cells and tissues caused by human pathogenic viruses and bacteria. Clinical Microbiology is one of the clinical/translational infectious disease departments at Karolinska Institutet, located in the newly built ANA Futura, with modern facilities to conduct top-quality research.

We are currently looking for a Research Specialist for the Systems Virology Laboratory at Flemingsberg Campus.

Description of the subject area

In the Systems Virology Laboratory, the focus is on work in the field of systems biology that aims to discover new biological insights by integrating biological datasets with multicomics data. The lab specializes in generating and analyzing multi-omics data related to various viral diseases.

Your mission

As Research Specialist, you will be responsible for leading research in virus biology, in particular research in flaviviruses. The majority of the role involves work on research activities. The role involves both independent work and working in teams, where you will be expected to support and assist students. You will receive expert mentoring in the field of viral biology and access to modern equipment for generating multi-omics data on viral diseases. 

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as a Research Specialist, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated research expertise as well as have documented research experience after defending their doctoral dissertation. Broad experience of working with viruses and publishing articles in the field of virology is a requirement. Having at least one publication as a senior author is a requirement. One should have published in wet and dry laboratories as first author or equivalent. Experience in wet labs and a basic understanding of complex biological pipelines is a prerequisite for success in this role.

As a person, we would like you to be creative and productive. You have leadership skills and can independently lead a research team as well as guide students if the need arises. You have good communication skills and are able to communicate manuscripts both orally and in writing. You will communicate ideas effectively and have experience of teaching at university level. In addition, the ability to independently author research and present results at conferences is essential.

Assessment criteria

It is particularly desirable that the applicant has

  • Experience in developing online biological prediction tools
  • Supervised students for their master's and doctoral theses
  • Knowledge of flavivirus infections, molecular virology and cell biology
  • Received independent grants
  • Published high impact research articles as first or corresponding author

It is desirable that the candidate has

  • Demonstrated leadership skills
