Do you want to contribute to improving human health?

The successful candidate will work in the research group headed by Prof Robert Harris that is a part of the Karolinska Neuroimmunology and Multiple Sclerosis (KNIMS) center which gathers around 40 researchers working on different aspects of the pathogenesis of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and other neurodegenerative diseases. The Applied Immunology & Immunotherapy group is physically located at the Centre for Molecular Medicine, a translational medical centre, and the research focus is developing innovative ways to treat chronic neurodegenerative diseases.

Your mission

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), chronic Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and glioma multiforme (GBM) brain tumors are all incurable and untreatable disease states characterized by neuroinflammation/neurodegeneration. We focus our research efforts on understanding the role of myeloid cells in these different disease processes, and specifically on how myeloid cells and stem cells can be used to treat them, particularly when brain-resident microglial cells have been depleted.

We are looking for a research assistant to mainly work on a project evaluating the therapeutic potential of amniotic epithelial cells (AECs) in mouse models of neurodegenerative diseases. The project will focus on the delivery of AECs, measuring disease outcomes at cellular and molecular level, and in vivo tracking of AECs in the central nervous system (CNS). The techniques include cryo-sectioning, immunohistochemistry, qPCR, western blot, extraction of cells/nuclie from tissue, single cell RNAseq and in vitro work using microglia/macrophage cell lines and primary cultures.

Your profile

The successful candidate is expected to have a Master degree, or a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a Swedish Master's degree. You must have knowledge in basic lab techniques such as PCR, ELISA, and immunohistochemistry and fluorescence microscopy. Maintaining a thorough lab work record with organized data and a good oral and written communication of the results will be required.

Merits

  • Previous knowledge with cryosectioning of spinal cords
  • Preparation of tissue for single cell RNAseq profiling
  • Theoretical knowledge of neurodegenerative diseases

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
