Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

A postdoctoral research position is available within the biostatistics group at the department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm. The Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics (MEB) is among the largest departments of epidemiology in Europe with special focus on increasing our knowledge of the aetiology of different diseases. Our department consists of researchers, doctoral students, biostatisticians, data collectors and database administrators as well as administrative personnel, in total some 250 staff. The department is situated at campus Solna. Further information can be found at ki.se/meb.

The biostatistics group at MEB comprises 4 professors, 3 senior lecturers, 5 PhD-level statisticians, 4 masters-level statisticians, and 7 doctoral students. The group is involved in a wide variety of research projects, including population-based cohort and case-control studies, twin and family studies, survival analyses, predictive modeling, genetic epidemiology and bioinformatics.

Your mission

The successful applicant will work on the development of statistical (mixed effects) models for evaluating mammography screening and studying breast cancer tumour progression. As well as statistical methodology development, the project will include analyses of data from large, detailed studies of breast cancer and mammography screening. There will be opportunities to collaborate with other academic statisticians and researchers in cancer epidemiology, as well as with radiologists exploring the use of artificial intelligence in breast cancer diagnostics. The successful applicant will also be encouraged to participate in a computational statistics project as part of a cross-university collaboration within an e-science program. The employment would be at least one year.

Your profile

Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence. It is considered as an advantage if you have completed your doctoral degree within the last three years, if there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) date of employment. This must be substantiated by the applicant's main supervisor, director or equivalent.

The position requires a university degree in statistics/mathematics and a PhD degree with focus on statistics, biostatistics, or a closely related field (experience in mixed effects modeling, computational statistics or survival analysis would be ideal), as well as programming skills. The applicant should have a strong interest in both methodology development and in health data analysis.

Personal qualities considered desirable:
Important personal characteristics are that you have good communication ability, can work in a structured way and enjoy collaborating, both within and beyond the group.
