Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

We are seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral researcher to join our team who is dedicated to commit to translational experimental physiology in the cross-section of inflammatory disease, muscle function and heart failure. A variety of approaches are used in our group to answer these research questions, and the group mainly conducts studies utilizing mouse models, patient biopsies and clinical data to better understand the disease processes and how new treatments may be used.

Division

The Andersson research group offers a creative and inspiring environment filled with expertise and curiosity. Our vision is to contribute to top quality medical research within our field both experimental and clinical studies in the areas of: Translational research on myocardial and skeletal muscle diseases, focusing on understanding how systemic inflammation can be linked to maladaptations in striated muscle function. We are part of the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology at Biomedicum, which combines basic, translational, and clinical research in an inspiring environment.

The principal investigator Daniel C Andersson is an associate professor in physiology at KI and a cardiologist at the Karolinska University Hospital. The group has a large network of interdisciplinary collaboration with national and international leading researchers within the field. We have strong collaborations with research groups at KI in experimental renal and vascular physiology, translational rheumatology and cardiology.

Duties and profile

We are running several comprehensive and ambitious research studies. In one of these studies, we are continuing our research initiatives on a mouse model of inflammatory myopathy which develops muscle weakness and metabolic disturbances. In this study, we combine multiple research methodologies to explore our research questions. This includes physiological methods, eg myographs for isolated muscle preparations, confocal microscopy and cellular Ca2+ imaging in isolated myocytes, combined with proteomics and common molecular biology techniques. The ultimate goal of our research is to understand disease mechanisms at the molecular level.

The Postdoctoral researcher will have the leading role in one or more projects which is conducted in collaboration with other researchers in the team. The postdoc will be responsible for the overall progress of the project including planning, literature reviewing, statistical analytical work, data presentation, and scientific article writing. The laboratory has a strong team spirit, where collaboration is encouraged between all members of the group.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated candidate with a clear interest in laboratory and animal work. Background in cardiac or muscle pathophysiology, with knowledge in molecular physiology and biochemical techniques is prioritized. Since the Postdoctoral researcher will work and communicate scientific findings in an interdisciplinary and international environment, good communication and writing skills in English are very important. The applicant should have knowledge in statistics and data analysis.

Entry requirements

Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.
To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post doctoral education.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Location: Solna

Type of scholarship

The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.
