Postdoctoral Researcher in regenerative medicine for spinal cord injury

We are at present a research group of six people at the Department of Neurobiology, Care sciences and Society, Division of Neurogeriatrics. We have a long-standing interest in spinal cord injury and repair, with a particular focus on human stem cell therapy. As a consequence we also have research projects that are of more developmental nature, and those that address applied stem cell biology. We are one of the partners in the Human Developmental Cell Atlas consortium (https://hdca-sweden.scilifelab.se) – a part of the international Human Cell Atlas initiative (humancellatlas.org) – and collaborate closely with research groups in other departments at Karolinska Institutet, as well as groups at SciLifeLab / Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) and Stockholm University.

Your mission

We have a position as post-doc open in our research group to study regeneration and repair after spinal cord injury. Our long-term goal is to improve residual functions by transplanting neural stem and progenitor cells, and/or enhance repair by endogenous stem cells. To achieve this, we need to better understand the development of human stem/progenitor cells, mechanisms of fate specification and differentiation in vitro and in vivo, and the genetic regulation of these processes as well as the role of the local environment. We apply a multi-omics strategy, and combine it with immunofluorescence, FACS and cell transplantation experiments.

Your profile

The position requires a PhD in neuroscience or related subject, preferably with focus on CNS injuries and/or neural regeneration, or neurodevelopment. It is considered as an advantage if you have completed your doctoral degree within the last three years, if there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) date of employment. This must be substantiated by the applicant's main supervisor, director or equivalent.

It is advantageous but not necessary to have documented experience of the following techniques: cell culture, cell transfection/transduction, flow cytometry/FACS, small animal surgery, RNA-sequencing and spatial methods for expression analysis. A certificate of approved FELASA education is considered a significant merit.

You should have good communication skills in English as well as collaborative skills to allow you to work closely with other post-docs and researchers with expertise in the techniques we apply.

Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society

The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, neurodegeneration, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 520 employees and a revenue 2021 of 483 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.

The research group is part of the Division of Neurogeriatrics which comprises around 65 people, mainly located in the new BioClinicum building, Solna. The research focus of the Division is neurodegenerative diseases and disorders, and Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, stroke and CNS trauma are addressed by research groups in our division.
