The Department of Biosciences and Nutrition performs research and education in several areas of
medical science including aging, Alzheimer´s disease, biomaterials, molecular endocrinology, cancer biology, functional genomics, systems biology, epigenetics, structural biochemistry, bioorganic chemistry, immunology, and nutrition. It offers an excellent international research and work environment, including around 250 scientists, students, administrative and technical personnel. The Department resides in Neo at Campus Flemingsberg, a biomedical research building, aimed at being a creative and an open environment that enables meetings, synergies, and exploration of areas of mutual interest across disciplines.

Do you want to contribute to improving human health?

Here you get the opportunity to work in one of the world’s leading medical research institutions and in one of Sweden’s top research labs seeking a better mechanistic understanding of aging and its associated morbidities. You will play a leading role in two exciting basic medical research projects: 1) A search for aging-preventive pharmaceuticals with an ability to prevent or cure Alzheimer’s disease (AD). 2) The effect of age on organ transplantations. Both projects are made possible by public (NIH) and private (Impetus) funding bodies from the United States.

Your mission

We are looking for a Postdoc to join our research group, the lab of Christian Riedel. Focus of this position are two research projects related to the biology of aging:

  • In collaboration with the laboratories of Sarah Hägg (MEB) and Per Nilsson (NVS), both also  located at Karolinska Institutet, you will repurpose FDA-approved drugs for the treatment  of AD. You will particularly focus on aging-preventive drug candidates, nominated  through  novel epidemiological analyses by the Hägg lab, and then test them for their  ability to ameliorate hallmark phenotypes of AD in vitro and in vivo, using human cellular  models and elegans models, respectively. Finally, you may participate in the testing of
top candidate compounds in state-of-the-art mouse models of AD. All human cellular  assays and mouse studies will be conducted in close contact with the Nilsson lab who have  long-standing expertise in AD research.

  • In collaboration with the transplantation units at Karolinska University Hospital, i.e. the clinicians Carl Jorns and Lars Wennberg, you will explore the consequences of age-mismatched organ transplantations and address pressing questions, e.g. whether old organs rejuvenate in younger recipients. You will receive tissue samples from the hospital, both from transplanted organs and their recipients, and conduct transcriptomic and epigenetic analyses that will allow you to monitor the biological ages of organs and their recipients at and post transplantation.

Both projects provide good opportunities for high-impact publications over the course of the next 2-4 years. For this work, you will synergize with aging biologists and a bioinformatician in the Riedel lab and with all the aforementioned collaborators. Further, you will have the support of a larger aging-focused and well-equipment research environment at our department.

We are looking for a talented and highly motivated scientist with a doctoral degree and strong background in Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Neurobiology, Genetics, and/or Biochemistry. Good expertise in mammalian cell culture techniques is desired. Expertise in animal work (C. elegans or mouse) will be appreciated. Also, background in the biology of aging or Alzheimer’s disease will be appreciated.

Applicants are expected to work independently but as part of an enthusiastic team and to be proficient in English. They are expected to play a leading role in the design and execution of their experiments as well as the analysis and the presentation/publication of the resulting data.

Your profile

Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence. It is considered as an advantage if you have completed your doctoral degree within the last three years. If there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) date of employment. This must be substantiated by the applicant's main supervisor, director or equivalent.

What do we offer?

A temporary position, 2 years with the possibility for extension.
