This position is a unique opportunity to conduct research in the research group Global Sexual Health, Department of Global Public Health. The Department of Global Public Health is an interdisciplinary institution that aims to advance knowledge on how to improve population health at local, national and global level. Research at the department aims to identify the determinants of health, develop and evaluate individual and structural interventions, and provide evidence for guidelines and policy documents. Many of the department's researchers are scientific advisors to authorities and other decision-makers at regional, national and international level. The department has 9 research groups, about 85 research students and about 140 employees.

Your mission

The work will be based at the Department of Global Public Health at Karolinska Institet and the WHO centre. The applicant is expected to independently conduct own research but also to assist in existing research projects in global health in low- and middle-income countries, and also register-based research in Sweden. Responsibilities include writing of grant applications, project coordination, project reporting, quantitative data analysis, scientific writing and frequent communication in speech and writing with both national and international partners. Supervision of students at Master and PhD level will also be expected to a lesser extent, as well as teaching in global health and sexual and reproductive health depending on the knowledge and experience of the applicant. You will also be an important part of the research group and is expected to actively participate in the work and development of the research group. Shorter or longer travel outside of Sweden primarily to Africa might be necessary.

This is a fixed-term position during approximately two years, extent 50%.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as a Research Specialist, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated research expertise as well as have documented research experience after defending their doctoral dissertation.

Mandatory requirements include a PhD degree in epidemiology, public health, global health or corresponding academic qualifications. English and Swedish language skills in speaking and writing is a mandatory requirement. Skills in data analysis, biostatistics, epidemiology, medicine are mandatory requirements. Experience of research in global health and sexual and reproductive health and/or HIV is a desired requirement as well as previous work in low-income countries. Experience in writing publications, grant applications and/or project coordination preferably at international level is a desired requirement. We are looking for an independent, proactive and positive person with a sense of responsibility and with previous experience of working with researchers and other staff from different countries and cultures. Medical background is an advantage but not a requirement.
