Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

Our research focuses mainly on host-bacterial interactions, with projects ranging from bacterial regulatory systems to innate immune responses in the host. The main research program includes studies on the molecular epidemiology and pathogenesis of pneumococcal infections, from the clinical side to more basic approaches looking at host-pathogen interactions. In our group, you will be able to gather knowledge ranging from basic microbiology, bacterial regulatory systems and immune response of the host to epidemiological and clinical studies.

Your mission

We are looking for a temporary position to work primarily on the construction of fluorescent-tagged proteins of different pneumococcal strains for protein localization and membrane vesicle tracking. This project will focus mainly on cell cycle and membrane vesicle biogenesis in Gram positive bacteria. Technologies include work on Streptococcus pneumoniae such as bacterial cell culture in BSL2, genomic DNA and plasmid extraction, PCR, mutant construction, expression of tagged proteins using different fluorophores, microscopy and super resolution microscopy such as STED. Maintaining a lab notebook with thorough and organized data, as well as oral and written communication of the results will be required.

Your profile

The successful candidate is preferably a BSc level student, with specialization in microbiology, looking to complement their studies with a short lab project. We are looking for someone with an understanding of microbiology theory and previous laboratory experience working with bacteria, especially growth and culturing, purifying genomic and plasmid DNA, PCR techniques, SDS-PAGE and Western blot, cloning and creating bacterial mutants, biochemical methods and immunological including ELISA and microscopy imaging. The applicant should be methodical and organized in work and have good record keeping skills. Successful applicants must have the ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a group and have excellent English communication skills, both oral and written.
