Do you want to contribute to improving human health?

Karolinska Institutet is one of the world's leading medical universities. Our vision at the institute is to drive the development of knowledge about life and work for better health for everyone. Here, we conduct successful medical research and have the largest range of medical education in Sweden. Global public health is researched and promoted at the department with the same name.

This Department of Global Health is now looking for a research assistant to provide support to the implementation of a short project focused on data analysis and reporting on a data set collected in a population in Bangladesh.

Your mission

The background is that a Dutch NGO, Max Foundation, supports an evidence-based programme in Bangladesh, called “Healthy Village”, an approach that mobilizes the whole community around child health. The Healthy Village approach combines WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene) with food & nutrition security and care to tackle stunting and improving child health. Communities drive their own behaviour change in this integrated and sustainable approach.

To follow the impact of the programme, a tracker function has been established to collect and evaluate data. The tracker makes data available to the communities and local governments so they can monitor progress and zoom in on what matters most to them.  A large set of data have now been accumulated with the help of the tracker system and some other data collection activities. No systematic review of the data has been conducted so far, nor has a more advanced analysis been made to assess the impact of the programme activities on outcome variables. In consequence, Max Foundation has now sought assistance from Karolinska Institutet to review and analyse data from the programme.

The position will be for three months and be placed in the research team on Global Child Health and Sustainable Development Goals which is part of a larger research group on Health Systems and Policy Research. The research group and the department offer an engaging and international research environment where a research assistant will have the opportunity to contribute to high-quality research and capacity building at the international top level.

The tasks for the research assistant will be to:

  • Review the full background to the Healthy Village programme in Bangladesh and its implementation
  • Acquire understanding of the data collection methods applied in the project, including the tracker instrument, their strengths and limitations
  • Perform statistical analysis of the data made available to the research group by Max Foundation and analyse results in relation to known facts about the programme
  • Make significant contributions to a write-up of the study in a scientific article
  • Work closely with the senior researcher who is in charge of the project

Your profile

Applicants should have at least a master degree in epidemiology, public health or related subjects. Good management of statistical methods and skillful use of statistical software is a requirement. Knowledge on Bangladesh is an asset. Excellent management of English is a prerequisite.
