Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Department of Oncology-Pathology is searching for a post-doctoral fellow to work with Dr Ola Larsson and co-workers to study the role of mRNA translation in cancer. Dysregulated mRNA translation is emerging as a central facet in cancer progression that is incompletely understood. The Larsson group is seeking the upstream signals as well as the downstream effectors underlying transcript-selective alterations of translation in cancer. The overall goal is to understand how mRNA translation can be targeted in future anti-cancer therapy.

Your mission

The Larsson lab focuses on understanding the role of mRNA translation in several cancer types and in both cancer and stromal cells. The focus is on achieving transcriptome-wide and detailed molecular understanding of how mRNA translation is dysregulated in cancer. The lab has expertise in development of state-of-the-art methods for wet-lab based studies of mRNA translation as well as development of computational tools to analyse the generated data. Although the focus for this project will be to use advanced molecular biology approaches to study mRNA translation in cancer, there will also be opportunities to learn analysis of large-scale data sets.

This project is focused on understanding how mRNA translation is altered in cancer. Studies will include both in-vitro models and patient samples with the overarching goal of understanding mechanisms coordinating changes in mRNA translation, identification of drug targets for anti-cancer therapy and characterization of subsets of patients who may benefit from such therapy.

Your profile

Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) date of employment. This must be substantiated by the applicant's main supervisor, director or equivalent.

The ideal candidate is highly motivated, with an outstanding completed PhD thesis (or equivalent) and a strong drive for a future career in research. The candidate should be capable of generating novel ideas, acquire knowledge independently and have a strong background in molecular biology. Experience in mRNA translation and analysis of large-scale data sets from polysome-profiling and/or ribosome-profiling are advantages. Fluency in spoken and written English is required. At least one published paper in a high-quality international peer-reviewed journal is necessary to be considered and additional academic merits are also considered. In addition, personal suitability will be a factor in the selection process.
