Karolinska Institutet, Department of Oncology-Pathology

- with focus on research

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

Do you want to work with experimental cancer research at Karolinska Institutet? Are you interested in post-transcriptional regulation and how it is changed in human cancer? Do you want to contribute to improved cancer diagnostics and treatment through your research? Welcome to a leading research environment in experimental oncology

Description of the subject area

The subject experimental oncology with focus on post-transcriptional regulation aims at increased understanding of the relationship between expression at the gene and protein levels and how this is regulated and can be altered in cancer. Several types of mechanisms can be involved, eg microRNA, and splicing and stability of the RNA molecule. Furthermore, the translation from mRNA to proteins which takes place with the help of ribosomes in polysome complexes with varying efficiency can have a major impact on protein expression. Mechanisms and molecules involved may provide the basis for novel diagnostics and treatment strategies in cancer. The research can employ several complementary approaches, such as global and targeted molecular analyses, experimental studies in model systems and patient samples, as well as bioinformatics. Development of techniques and algorithms to study mechanisms underlying gene-selective post-transcriptional changes are other important components.

Your mission

The position is focused on research.

The position as Professor includes 100% of fulltime and is placed at the Department of Oncology-Pathology which today runs laboratory activities at BioClinicum at Karolinska University Hospital-Solna and at the nearby located SciLifeLab.

The employed professor will mainly work on experimental cancer research focusing on important tumor mechanisms, and is expected to provide academic leadership within this field. The applicant shall function as a principal investigator (PI) and conduct high quality research within post-transcriptional regulation in cancer, as well as supervise doctoral students and younger researchers. The holder is expected to actively participate in postgraduate education at the department and also contribute to the education on the basic level in experimental oncology. The holder is expected to contribute to opportunities to implement their results in clinical applications. The position also includes active contribution to the common research activities and the management group at the Department of Oncology-Pathology.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for an employment as Professor with focus on research the applicant must have demonstrated good pedagogical expertise and excellent scientific expertise (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).

The applicant must present a clear line of research as principal investigator within experimental oncological research about post-transcriptional regulation in human cancer.

The applicant shall be a professor-competent researcher with clear potential for future development and an internationally recognized researcher within post-transcriptional regulation in cancer who actively lead and conduct research in the subject area.

Assessment criteria

The Professorship has a focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: scientific expertise (3), pedagogical expertise (2), and leadership, development and collaboration expertise (1).

For employment as Professor at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure 3.1.1 are applied in relation to established profile of employment.

It is particularly meritorious that the applicant has shown

  • Active scientific production of high quality within the research field with a clear senior role
  • Ability to obtain own research funding in competition and ongoing own project grants

It is meritorious that the applicant has shown

  • Supervision of postdocs and doctoral students within the field in an experimental environment
  • A clear plan for future development of the topic post-transcriptional regulation in cancer from the applicants own area of expertise
  • Successful research within the field in collaboration with researches within and outside of the department of oncology-pathology

The applicant shall also have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education (or have equivalent competence), as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution. If the person appointed for the position is lacking such education at the time of the employment, the appointee must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
