Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

A joint post-doctoral position is available at the Division of Chemistry 2, Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics (MBB), and the Department of Oncology and Pathology, at Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm. The successful candidate will become part of front-line research in the field of bioactive lipids, especially the leukotrienes, important targets for drug development, and participate in a highly interdisciplinary collaboration between a structural and a computational lab. This particular project is aimed at elucidating molecular interactions and dynamics of proteins within the leukotriene cascade, using computational, biochemical and biophysical methods.

Your profile

We are looking for a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher in structural bioinformatics. The candidate is expected to participate in collaborative efforts to simulate leukotriene pathway enzymes with coarse-grained and atomistic simulation methods, in order to generate and test predictions in the lab.

Advanced knowledge in structural bioinformatics and proven experience with molecular simulation tools (GROMACS, CHARMM, etc), multiscale and coarse-grained approaches is a prerequisite. The applicant must be well acquainted with programming & scripting languages common in the biomolecular simulation field (bash, python, etc). Previous experience with simulations of membrane proteins, knowledge of complimentary structural analysis techniques (Network Analysis, PCA, etc) and additional molecular modelling methods (docking, virtual screening, etc) will be highly valued.

Fluency in English, a high level of organizational and communication skills, as well as an ability to work independently, is mandatory. The candidate is also expected to take a strong lead in managing project(s), contribute to writing manuscripts and mentor junior members of the team.

Your role

Your main role will be to perform a broad range of multiscale computational analyses of leukotriene pathway enzymes to investigate their dynamics and interactions with ligands and other proteins of the same biochemical cascade. You will have the opportunity to work with significant freedom and independence within an interdisciplinary as well as an international setting, benefiting from interactions with two different labs.

The applicant needs to have strong competence in running projects independently and good abilities for teamwork and cooperation within a dynamic group of basic scientists. The applicant is expected to lead and conduct cutting-edge research for publication in highly ranked journals and apply for independent grants.

Eligibility

  • A PhD degree in computational biology, preferably MD simulations of protein structural dynamics.
  • Experience with basic experimental technics in cell biology and molecular biology.
  • Knowledge of protein chemistry, including soluble as well as membrane proteins.

Entry requirements

Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.
To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post doctoral education.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Type of scholarship

The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

Application process

An application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  • A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  • A complete list of publications
  • A summary of current work (no more than one page)

The application is to be submitted on the Varbi recruitment system.
