Department of Clinical Neuroscience (CNS) conducts research and education in the field of neuroscience from the molecular level to the society level. The clinical research and education is conducted in collaboration with other research groups from the Karolinska Institutet, with other universities as well as the Stockholm County Council.
Disorders of the brain are among the biggest challenges facing public and personal health today. Parkinson’s disease (PD) is the second most common progressive neurodegenerative disorder diagnosed by the presence of rest tremor, rigidity, and bradykinesia. In addition to the motor symptoms, the patients suffer from several non-motor symptoms among which cognitive decline affects up to 80% of the patients. Better understanding of the pathophysiology underlying dementia in PD and its treatments is a large unmet medical need. For this purpose, the Department of Translational Neuropharmacology uses patient samples from blood, spinal fluid and brain. A focus is on finding new biomarkers and targets for the treatment of cognitive impairment and dementia in PS in collaboration with pure proteomics and genomics groups. The Department of Translational Neuropharmacology has a number of biochemical and molecular methods for validating findings in omics analyzes. Thanks to the breadth of methodologies in the laboratory, results from molecular and cellular analyzes can be transferred to preclinical phase studies.
During the postdoctoral employment, the development of various omics analyzes will take place. In our own research, there is a focus on proteomics analyzes, but genomics studies also take place in collaboration with other research groups. Successful applicants will generate data that guides the development of new biomarkers and potential targets for the treatment of dementia in PS. Ability to cooperate and strong motivation are expected throughout the project. Candidates will be encouraged to act as mentors for graduate students and as co-mentors for doctoral students, thus building up their experience for future leadership.
Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence. It is considered as an advantage if you have completed your doctoral degree within the last three years, if there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) date of employment. This must be substantiated by the applicant's main supervisor, director or equivalent.
The applicant should have an academic degree in biological sciences and a doctoral degree in neuroscience or omics methodology. Applicants should have a strong background in the mechanisms underlying the pathophysiology of neurodegeneration. Furthermore, the applicant should also have experience or at least an interest in translational research and work with research samples from patients. The applicant may have spent part of his / her education in a foreign country and contribute international experience to the laboratory. Excellent knowledge of English is required.
