The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 540 employees and a revenue 2023 of 530 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.

The Division of Neurogeriatrics consists of about 65 employees. The division conducts experimental and translational research related primarily to Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative diseases, but also more general molecular mechanisms with biomedical relevance are studied. The division is mainly located in BioClinicum, KI Campus Solna, and partially in Neo, KI Campus Flemingsberg.

Description of the subject area

The senior research specialist will drive a research line on preclinical models of aging and Alzheimer’s disease at the Division of Neurogeriatrics. More specifically the research will be based on in vitro and mouse models exhibiting certain known risk or protective factors for Alzheimer’s Disease.

Your mission

The candidate will lead, plan and coordinate a preclinical research line focusing on risk factors and treatments for Alzheimer’s disease. The candidate will use in vitro models as well as novel mouse models for specific risk factors such as cholesterol in relation to Alzheimer pathologies. Moreover, the candidate will study the involvement of sex hormones and the effects of existing pharmacological compounds related to risk factors to understand molecular mechanisms of AD pathology and progression at different ages and between sexes.

The candidate will be involved in teaching, supervision of PhD students, research grant applications, disseminate research results in peer review publications and at conferences and participate in national and international collaborations.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as a Senior Research Specialist, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated good level of research expertise with significant scientific production. The applicant must also have demonstrated a good scientific independence to which their own contribution has been significant and a research plan of high quality with clear potential for the future.

The applicant needs to have good communicative and cooperation capabilities, since it involves supervision of PhD students, scientific collaborations and to be part of the PI group at the Division. Excellent ability to speak and write in English is a requirement and to have published as an independent scientist in several peer review articles as first and at least one as last author. The applicant should have deep knowledge, extensive experience and practical skills in research animal work including animal behavior assessing cognition and memory.

The applicant shall have a strong track record in preclinical research within the neuroscience field especially Alzheimer’s    disease with excellent skills in behavioral assessment of rodent models with a focus on memory and cognition.

  • Scientific original publications, their quality and quantity, with special consideration on publications after the doctoral education.
  • Scientific independent ability demonstrated through leading and senior authorships.
  • Presentations and scientific assignments at international congresses.
  • Research grants received in regional, national and international competition.
  • National and international research collaborations.
  • Research responsibility as supervisor for degree project on advanced level, doctoral student and postdoc.
  • Research experience from a research group other than where the doctoral education was conducted.
  • Development of one's own research profile within the subject area.
  • Plan for future research based on current science

It is meritorious that the applicant has shown

  • Documented experience in forms of scientific original publications from previous research in neurodegenerative diseases/neuroscience and working with mouse models of Alzheimer’s disease is a merit.
  • Reviewer and evaluator of the scientific work of others.
  • Review articles and other scientific publications.
