The Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology (MTC) at Karolinska Institutet in Solna conducts research and education in immunology, infection biology, cell biology and cancer. Our keywords are interdisciplinary, clinically based basic research and national and international cooperation.
We search for a Research specialist that together with Professor Birgitta Henriques Normark and her research group, and the company Intervacc and collaborators, will work on projects in bacteriology and microbial vaccine development for human and veterinary usage. The research group focuses on studies of host-microbe interactions with a major interest in gram-positive infectious such as pneumococcal infections.
This position includes studies of potential vaccine candidates and effects of vaccination against infections that cause diseases in humans and animals. Vaccine candidates will be characterized, and new potential vaccine candidates identified, and a pipeline for vaccine production will be established. Both serological, genomic, and proteomic techniques as well as in vitro and in vivo models will be employed for pathogenesis and vaccine studies. The studies will partly be done (50%) together with the company Intervacc.
A PhD in microbiology (bacteriology) will give priority. Previous experience in vaccine development, bacteriology, immunology and in molecular microbiology is favorable, especially previous experience on bacterial pathogenesis, RNA, gram-positive bacteria, and bacterial vaccinology. Documented experience in relevant research areas and extensive experience on streptococci, microbial molecular technologies, and of in vitro model systems is an advantage. Experience with scientific collaborations, as well as experience in project management are of advantage, in addition to social skills and language skills, especially in English and Swedish. Interpersonal skills and excellent capabilities to work in a group are essential.

To be eligible for employment as a Research Specialist, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated research expertise as well as have documented research experience after defending their doctoral dissertation.
