Karolinska Institutet, Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society

The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 540 employees and a revenue 2023 of 530 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.

Aging Research Center (ARC), a division within NVS, is located at KI Campus Solna, Stockholm. It is a multidisciplinary academic environment, representing medicine (e.g., neurology, epidemiology, psychiatry, geriatrics), psychology (e.g., cognition, structural, functional, and molecular brain imaging), and social gerontology (e.g., sociology, public health, social epidemiology, social work). The center has around 70 employees, it has a strong focus on research with unique research resources, such as large-scale longitudinal studies and nationwide registries.

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

COBRA
The present postdoctoral position is based on the longitudinal project, Cognition, Brain, and Aging (COBRA), within the psychology group at ARC. Data collection takes place at Umeå University and PET and MRI are used to examine the relationship of the neurotransmitter dopamine (DA) and other brain parameters (i.e., grey- and white matter volumes, white-matter microstructure, functional activation patterns during rest and task performance, perfusion) to cognitive performance and change in aging. A chief focus concerns longitudinal trajectories of DA availability and how those map onto corresponding cognitive paths. COBRA focuses on DA D2 receptors.

Your mission

A major task for candidate will be to contribute to the research activities within COBRA, conceptually as well as methodologically. In addition, there are possibilities to initiate individual research projects, based on the candidate´s interests.

This is a temporary position of two years.

Your profile

Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence. It is considered as an advantage if you have completed your doctoral degree within the last three years, if there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) date of employment. This must be substantiated by the applicant's main supervisor, director or equivalent.

We are looking for you who have a strong track record in terms of publications. Research experience regarding different brain imaging modalities is required. In particular, documented skills in integrating MRI data (e.g., functional connectivity, white-matter microstructure) and PET data (i.e., dopamine binding) as they relate to cognition weigh heavily in the recruitment process. We stress research expertise when assessing applicants. We conduct research in a multicultural environment and collaborative skills are important as well as good knowledge in English. The person who gets employed is expected to actively participate in the work of writing applications to external financiers together with the group.
