Karolinska Institutet, Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society, Division of Neurogeriatric

The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 540 employees and a revenue 2023 of 530 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.

The Division of Neurogeriatrics consists of about 65 employees. The division conducts experimental and translational research related primarily to Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative diseases, but also more general molecular mechanisms with biomedical relevance are studied. The division is mainly located in BioClinicum, KI Campus Solna, and partially in Neo, KI Campus Flemingsberg.

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Ankarcrona Lab currently consists of 6 people with different academic levels and backgrounds, educationally as well as culturally. The focus of the research group is the understanding of mitochondrial dysfunction mechanisms leading to synaptic alterations and neurodegeneration, and the search for mitotherapeutics with potential to reach clinical studies. Along the past years Ankarcrona Lab has done important discoveries in the field of mitochondria and Alzheimer´s disease such as the identification of the pathways by which amyloid-β peptide internalize in mitochondria and the discovery of new modulators of mitochondria-endoplasmic reticulum contact sites. We work in an inspiring and interactive research environment in BioClinicum, KI-Campus Solna, and have ongoing national and international research collaborations

Your mission

The project involves the study of the molecular mechanisms regulating mitochondrial release and transfer in brain cells and cerebrospinal fluid under physiology and Alzheimer´s disease conditions. The tasks are varying and involve extent practical laboratory work. The responsibilities include culturing primary cells (neurons and astrocytes), , confocal microscopy of fixed and live cells, isolation, and handling of cerebrospinal fluid samples from mice and its analysis by flow cytometry. Data analyses and compilation of results should also be carried by the applicant. The applicant may also be requested to help in the lab supervision of master students.

Your profile

A person is eligible if he or she has been awarded a Master Degree in biotechnology, biomedicine or similar area. We are looking for a person with a dedicated interest and enthusiasm in the neurobiology field. You must have at least one year experience in a biomedical lab, preferably with focus on quantitative analysis and cell culturing. Good expertise in molecular biology and techniques such as immunocytochemistry, flow cytometry, confocal microcopy, work with animals including extraction of CSF and culture of neurons from mouse embryos as well as FELASA B certificate are merits.

We value enthusiasm and commitment towards research, a strong collaborative attitude, good organizing and social skills. Good skills in writing and speaking English is required.
