The Department of Clinical Science and Education Södersjukhuset (KI SÖS) has a long tradition of clinical research and education. KI SÖS has a large doctoral study program with approximately 100 PhD students and is among other courses running a new doctoral school for clinicians aiming for increased knowledge in medical treatments. We are now searching for a professor to be responsible for and to develop the new doctoral school.

Description of the subject area

The Cardiology Unit is one of the most research-active clinics at Södersjukhuset, which not only conducts traditional acute and elective cardiac care but also intensive medical care. The research has focus on clinical research in common diseases, especially in atrial fibrillation, myocardial infarction, cardiac arrest and heart failure. Furthermore, the clinic is involved in graduate education for doctors and nurses. Currently, the department of Cardiology consists of two professors, one senior lecturer, two docents, 10 PhDs and 10 PhD students.

Your mission

The becoming Professor and specialist in Cardiology will be responsible for the new research school for clinicians in treatment research and parts of clinical medicine within the medical program. The employment includes to conduct internationally recognized research in cardiology. An important part of the work will be to develop an academical leadership within education at KI SÖS and cardiological research within the Cardiology Unit. The employment will also include overall responsibility for research in cardiology.    

The Professorship will be combined with clinical duty as specialist trained physician at the Cardiology Unit at Södersjukhuset, where clinical experience and knowledge is of great importance to be able to organize the clinical education and research in the best way possible. The employment involves 30% clinical work and 70% teaching and research.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as Professor with, focus on education and research, the applicant must have demonstrated excellent pedagogical expertise, good scientific expertise and clinical expertise. The applicant must have experience of education at an advanced level (PhD students), clinical education within medical programs, clinical work and supervision on different levels.

The applicant must demonstrate documented experience of leading courses for PhD students or within the medical program.

The applicant shall also have completed courses of 10 weeks of higher education training in teaching or have equivalent competence in accordance with the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institutions recommendations for qualification as a higher education teacher.

The position will be combined with a position as a specialist trained physician at the Cardiology Unit, Södersjukhuset and therefore the candidate must have an MD with specialist competence in Cardiology, or corresponding competence, as well as fulfill the National Board of Health and Welfare's requirements for practicing medicine in Sweden. If the appointee fulfills Södersjukhuset requirements for employment as Senior Registrar or Senior Consultant, the appointee can be offered this position.

Since the clinical work includes contact with patients, good knowledge of both speaking and writing in Swedish is a requirement.

Assessment criteria

The Professorship has a focus on education and research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: research expertise (2), educational expertise (3), leadership, development and collaboration expertise (2) and clinical expertise (2).

For employment as Professor at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure 3.1.2 are applied in relation to established profile of employment.
