- with focus on education and research
The Department of Laboratory Medicine (LabMed) within Karolinska Institutet (KI) consists of seven divisions where teaching and research is performed in pathology, clinical pharmacology, clinical physiology, clinical chemistry, clinical microbiology, clinical immunology and transfusion medicine. Labmed is involved in teaching on a large scale and is active in 10 of KI's 19 undergraduate programs. The division conducts translational research through a combination of strong basic scientific and clinical competence and has a tradition of conducting research on clinical material.
Molecular pathology is a broad and dynamic field of research that encompasses the entire spectrum of molecular changes that initiate and contribute to tumor development in humans and that is crucial for the development of clinical diagnostics and treatment. These can, for example, consist of stable or dynamic changes that produce effects at both the gene and protein level and are seen within subpopulations of cancer cells. The analyzes can include studies in various model systems for human cancer as well as analyzes in tissue samples from patients. The research within the Division of Pathology aims to identify molecular mechanisms for disease development and develop new diagnostics and treatment with a focus on various tumor diseases and inflammatory conditions.
