Karolinska Institutet, Department of Medicine, Huddinge

- with focus on research

Do you want to contribute to better health for all?

Sweden and the world face large health challenges. Physical activity is decreasing, and our eating habits are far from optimal. According to the World Health Organization WHO, non‐communicable lifestyle diseases kill 41 million people every year. Many of these can be prevented with healthier lifestyles. Preventive measures are required, and it is of utmost importance that they are evidence-based. Therefore, Karolinska Institutet (KI) wishes to establish a Professorship in cardiovascular prevention. The aim is to improve public health, reduce sick leave and prevent unnecessarily early deaths in the Swedish population.

The Professorship in cardiovascular prevention has been made possible thanks to several external donations to Karolinska Institutet. It will be located at the Department of Medicine Huddinge (MedH), which is one of KI's leading clinical departments. The department's research is organized into six departments and three research centers. About 70 different research groups are active at the department, whose ambition is to be a leading institution in medical research and learning.

Description of the subject area

Cardiovascular disasters account for most deaths from lifestyle diseases. According to the WHO, 80% of these can be prevented through preventive measures. These must be broadly laid out and span the entire medical field. The task of the recruited professor is to conduct their own research and at the same time act as a unifying force for other cardiovascular prevention research at KI.

The Professorship should have a clear research focus directed against measures taken in primary care, where health challenges can be met effectively and where preventive measures can have an effect before citizens become so ill that they need hospital care. This focus is supported by policymakers, companies and authorities, as well as by the healthcare system. In addition to this, political awareness of the importance of prevention in primary care is increasing, which is why the Professorship also has a strategic value in line with political developments.

The academic placement at MedH ensures a clear link between primary care and experimental, translational and clinical research throughout the internal medicine field. This is of great importance as cardiovascular morbidity is multifactorial and preventive measures must be based on molecular knowledge of metabolic events. The field of prevention, like the rest of healthcare, will in the future be clearly linked to precision medicine, and increased collaboration between primary care, care in a hospital environment and translational academic research at the forefront is therefore of great importance.

Your role

The professor we are looking for in this position is a clinically active physician. The Professorship will be associated with clinical activities in primary care and the clinical employment is planned to comprise 30%. In addition to conducting your own research and clinical activities in cardiovascular prevention, you are expected to take part in the overall coordination and development of cardiovascular prevention research at KI. You are of course also expected to take part in KI's educational assignments at undergraduate and advanced level in collaboration with those of KI's departments responsible for the various educations.

You are also expected to spread and develop knowledge of lifestyle and healthy living habits within the third task, as well as to be a research and education support for health care. Your assignment will therefore be multifactorial and place high demands on communicative ability and the ability to effectively interact with different health professions and with structures in society.

As the position includes clinical employment, you must, in addition to English, possess knowledge and proficiency in Swedish, Norwegian or Danish (C1 level according to the common European reference scale, CERS).
