Karolinska Institutet, Department of Cell and Molecular Biology

- with focus on research

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Department of Cell and Molecular Biology at Karolinska Institutet is a leading academic research center prioritizing long term projects. Our researchers carry out original and ground-breaking research across different areas of cell and molecular biology and publish their results in top-ranked journals regularly. Together with four other preclinical departments we create an exciting environment in Biomedicum. We are looking for a professor focusing on research in adipocyte biology.

Description of the subject area

Adipose tissue dysfunction with dysregulated adipocyte (fat cell) homeostasis and function are linked to several diseases such as type-2 diabetes and obesity. Understanding how adipocyte biology is linked to obesity is key for the development of new therapeutic strategies. Of particular importance for obesity is to reveal how adipose tissue is maintained, turned over and regenerated in the body. Developing and using novel technologies to characterize tissue turnover in the human body is a pivotal goal.

Your mission

You are an internationally leading expert in cell and tissue turnover, cell regeneration, with focus on adipocyte biology. The work involves teaching and supervision at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. You will become a group leader with delegated responsibility in areas such as work environment in the research group. You are expected to contribute to administrative duties, collaborate locally, nationally, and internationally, and to carry out outreach activities. You must have substantial ongoing funding through grants obtained in competition, and you are expected to pursue research at such a level that future adequate funding is obtained.

Eligibility requirements

The candidate must have demonstrated both research and teaching expertise, as well as management, and collaborative skills (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).

You are a scientist with high international visibility in the broadly defined fields of adipocyte biology and cell turn over. You have documented experience of national and international collaborations addressing fundamental biological and/or disease-related questions with the focus on making new and important discoveries. You have published your results in top tier scientific journals as senior author. You have supervised undergraduate students, doctoral students and postdocs. Documented management training is also a requirement.

Assessment criteria

The Professorship has a focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: research expertise (3), educational expertise (2), and leadership, development and collaboration expertise (2).

Particularly attractive merits are if you developed methods to study cell turn over, made important discoveries about obesity and about the link between adipocytes and diabetes. Emphasis will be placed on the personal qualities required to further strengthen the subject area of adipocyte biology at Karolinska Institutet. Collaboration with clinical scientists to apply the technology to clinically relevant areas and on clinical materials is a merit.

The appointee must have undergone 10 weeks (or equivalent competence) of higher education training in teaching in accordance with the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institutions recommendations for qualification as a higher education teacher or having otherwise obtained equivalent knowledge. If the person appointed for the position is lacking such education at the time of the employment, the appointee must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the candidates, Karolinska Institutet will judge which of the candidates that have the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
