Malaria is a vector-borne tropical and subtropical disease affecting over 241 million people just last year. Causing 627,000 deaths in Africa alone mainly driven by Plasmodium falciparum infections. Unfortunately, antimalarial treatment drug resistance is the recurring obstacle towards complete malaria control and elimination. Therefore, the aim of our group has continuously been to identify and monitor the spread of drug resistance, working in collaboration with malaria endemic countries to respond to parasitological, clinical and epidemiological research questions.
Pedro Gil´s group is looking for an independent researcher with at least 5 years of experience in malaria research and tropical diseases wiling to join a growing group at Karolinska Institutet. The candidate will have range of broad responsibilities, associated with a number of projects presently running in the group. This includes research in the genetic and mechanistic basis of parasite resistance to well established (Lumefantrine, Amodiaquine, Piperaquine) and new (KAF156 (Ganaplacide)) antimalarials, as well as their associated pharmacogenetics.
The person will be responsible of design, perform and analyze experiments in the several projects ongoing in the group, as well as writing the corresponding scientific report and contribute to grant application processes. Furthermore, the candidate will be formally involved in the supervision of several students as well as helping with lab managing duties. Additionally, field work is previewed in West Africa, including locations in Mali, Portuguese Speaking African Countries (Angola, Sao Tomé and Príncipe), and Brazil.
