The Division of Infectious Diseases performs research and education in close collaboration with the Karolinska University Hospital. The research teams address a wide range of infectious diseases using clinical, epidemiological and experimental approaches.
The Färnert research group works on understanding the mechanisms of acquisition and maintenance of immunity as well as clinical aspects of malaria and other infections. Within this work, we focus on exploring the genetic diversity of malaria parasite antigens of interest for vaccine development.
The employment is focused on molecular biology and epidemiology of malaria. The project involves molecular detection and genotyping of parasites in epidemiological studies. The overall goal of the research project is to understand the importance of the genetic polymorphism of parasite antigens in relation to protective immune responses in order to be able to identify interesting antigens for an effective malaria vaccine. The work will also comprise evaluation of molecular tools for diagnostic purposes. The employment includes responsibility for planning and designing experiments, leading and performing analyzes and supervising students. Within the employment, there are good opportunities to develop laboratory and scientific competence and to get in touch with an active research environment.
We are looking for a biologist or biomedicine graduate with expertise in molecular biology. Experience of laboratory work especially molecular methods is a requirement. Previous work in malaria research and studies on parasite genetics in epidemiological studies as well as optimization of molecular methods is a merit. Furthermore, the applicant is expected to be able to work independently, compile data, and write reports as well as to have good collaborative skills and experience of working well in a group. Previous student supervision is a merit. Good knowledge of English is a requirement.
