The Department of Global Public Health is a multidisciplinary department with the goal to increase knowledge on how population health can be improved at local, national and global level. Research at the department aims to map out the determinants of health, to develop and evaluate structural and individual-oriented interventions and contribute with knowledge to inform guidelines and policy documents. Many researchers at the department are scientific advisors to authorities and other decision makers at regional, national and international levels. The department has 9 research groups, about 85 PhD students and around 140 employees.

The Centre for Epidemiology and Community Medicine (CES) is a part of Region Stockholm. CES is charged with developing public health interventions to contribute to good and equitable health in the population. We cover the whole public health chain of innovation – from epidemiologic surveillance to support in implementation of health promoting and preventive interventions. CES is part of the research, training and development division of SLSO, Region Stockholm and has about 80 employees.

Description of the subject area

The medical specialty social medicine is characterised by competence regarding human health and disease in interaction with the surrounding society. In addition the specialty includes knowledge about the determinants of health, such as social and psychosocial causes of disease and ill health, the importance of social structure, the environment, healthcare systems, working life and people’s living conditions and health-related behaviours, for health in different groups, the distribution of health, and social consequences of disease. The competence area also includes clinical knowledge on common diseases and major health problems, especially among marginalized groups.

Your mission

The overall purpose of the position is to develop and strengthen research and training in social medicine at Karolinska Institutet in close collaboration with Region Stockholm. You will also conduct research, including supervision of PhD students and postdoc researchers. The successful candidate will also contribute to teaching and planning of teaching at basic and advanced level, for example of medical students and in the master programmes in public health at the department. Work tasks also include to apply, as principal investigator as well as co-applicant, for research funding in national and international competition. You will also develop collaborations within Karolinska Institutet and with other universities, as well as with authorities and other bodies in the area of public health.

The position is combined with a clinical employment (50/50) as a specialist trained physician at CES, where you will develop and disseminate knowledge regarding health and public health interventions in Stockholm County, and contribute to the implementation of such interventions at a systems level with a focus on healthcare services and other welfare services.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for an employment as Senior Lecturer with focus on research, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated good pedagogical expertise; excellent scientific expertise and clinical expertise (see the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).

The applicant must be an internationally recognized researcher within the research field with scientific findings where the applicant's own efforts have been significant, and with a research plan of high quality and with strong future potential.

The position will be combined with a position as a specialist trained physician in social medicine, psychiatry or family medicine at the Centre for Epidemiology and Community Medicine, SLSO. Therefore the candidate must have an MD with specialist competence in social medicine, psychiatry or family medicine, or corresponding competence, as well as fulfill the National Board of Health and Welfare's requirements for practicing medicine in Sweden.

The applicant should further have leadership experience and have obtained research funding in competition. The applicant must also have extensive experience in teaching and supervision of students.  Since the position includes clinical work, the applicant must, besides English, demonstrate proficiency in Swedish (C1 level according to the common European reference scale (CERS).

Assessment criteria

The Senior Lectureship has a focus on research. In the assessment of applicants we put special weight on scientific competence within the area. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: scientific expertise (3), pedagogical expertise (2), leadership, development and collaboration expertise (2) and clinical expertise (1).

For employment as Senior Lecturer at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure 3.2.1 are applied in relation to established profile of employment.

It is particularly meritorious that the applicant has solid knowledge of the healthcare system. It is meritorious that the applicant is familiar with epidemiologic study design, interdisciplinary research, and have experience of working in different contexts.

The applicant shall also have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education (or have equivalent competence), as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution. If the person appointed for the position is lacking such education at the time of the employment, the appointee must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
