The Department of Biosciences and Nutrition performs research and education in several areas of
medical science including aging, Alzheimer, biomaterial, molecular endocrinology, cancer biology,
functional genomics, systems biology, epigenetics, structural biochemistry, bioorganic chemistry,
immunology, and nutrition. It offers an excellent international research and working environment,
including around 250 scientists, students, administrative and technical personnel. The Department
resides in Neo at Campus Flemingsberg, a biomedical research building, aimed at being a creative and open environment that enables meetings, synergies, and exploration of areas of mutual interest across disciplines.

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

We are seeking a highly motivated person to join as a principal researcher to work on tumor genomics, in particular utilizing samples biobanked at KI and elsewhere in Sweden.
The position is a 20 % permanent position.

Description of the subject area

Tumor genomics is an area of intense research, paving the way to personalized therapies. Tumor genomics involves not only work on the hereditary and somatic changes in DNA that contribute to tumor initiation and progression, but it includes also the many levels of aberrations in the regulatory genome such as DNA and histone modifications, changes in chromatin annotation, and gene expression. Translating the findings into better management of neoplasia is the ultimate goal.

Your mission

The work will focus on characterizing tumor genomes on multiple levels of data, such as genome, methylome, transcriptome, and chromatin annotation data. Approaches utilized in the latter include but are not limited to ChIP-seq, and HiChIP. Integrating molecular data to clinical parameters, such as response to treatment, is an integral part of the efforts.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as a Principal Researcher, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated research expertise. The applicant must also be a Research Leader and have established their own line of research. The applicant should furthermore have shown documented, high-quality scientific production, particularly in the last six years and have the potential to energetically drive their research forward as well as be recognized nationally and internationally. The applicant should also have obtained good, long-term and preferably external funding and have the potential to obtain further external funding.  The applicant should have shown teaching and supervision experience and demonstrated good leadership qualities.

Assessment criteria

It is particularly meritorious that the applicant has shown

  • excellence in research in the field of tumor genomics, as described above.

It is meritorious that the applicant has shown

  • ability in supervision of students, as well as ability attract external competed funding.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
