Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

Research in Germ cell biology and maternal-fetal interactions for epigenetic inheritance of disease is conducted in Qiaolin Deng’s lab, at Dept. Physiology and Pharmacology, Karolinska Institutet.

Description of the subject area

We are focusing on several endocrinological and reproductive diseases such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and type I diabetes (T1D) and aiming to investigate how the germline and maternal condition play role in fetal programming and epigenetic inheritance of disease. Our research aims to achieve in-depth knowledge of maternal-fetal interactions, transcriptional regulation of key organ functions with link to offspring phenotypes. To achieve this, we use in vitro differentiation of germ cells from pluripotent stem cells, genetic and non-genetic mouse modeling and phenotypic analyses, single-cell sequencing and organoid culture.

Your mission

The lab is now recruiting a Research Specialist who will work in close collaboration with the rest of the team on several ongoing projects. The successful applicant will join and enhance ongoing efforts in vitro gametogenesis from pluripotent stem cells, and molecular and functional analyses of mouse models in fetal development and adult pathophysiology. In addition, the successful candidate will conduct a research on how metabolic reprogramming and mitochondrial dynamics impact on primordial germ cell (PGC) migration and programmed cell death during embryonic development and how manipulation of mitochondrial function affects in vitro differentiation of germ cells from pluripotent stem cells.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as a Research Specialist, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have a scientific background relevant to the study of germ cell biology, and experience on ultrastructural study on mouse meiotic cell division and chromosome pairing is preferable. In addition, the successful candidate should possess extensive experience on mitochondrial biology and cell metabolism. The applicant should have demonstrated a high level of research expertise with significant scientific production in recent years in internationally prestigious journals and occupy a prominent place in the list of authors, preferably as the senior author. It is especially important that the applicant have high ability to deal with multiple projects simultaneously, solve problems independently and interact well with group members. Previous experience supervising postdocs and doctoral students constitute a strong merit.

Assessment criteria

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
