KI, Department of NVS, Division of Clinical geriatrics

The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 540 employees and a revenue 2025 of 580 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.

The Division of Clinical Geriatric, with over 100 employed and affiliated researchers are located both in Neo, Campus Flemingsberg and in the Q-building in Solna. We conduct research focusing on cognitive impairment, dementia, and other aging related disorders, and education, among other medical graduates. Our research is multi-faceted and is in close collaboration with leading institutions and clinics worldwide. The research is clinically oriented with an emphasis on diagnosis, prevention and treatment. The division has a close cooperation with the Medical Unit Aging within Theme Inflammation and Aging at Karolinska University Hospital.

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research and improve human health?

Register research for studies of dementia with focus on comorbidity and treatment is of clinical importance. Especially the intersection of kidney failure and cognition is a burgeoning research field. We are seeking a top candidate who will expand this field implementing cutting edge epidemiological methods in Swedish cohorts.

Your mission

We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated clinical scientist who is interested in working in a multi- disciplinary team at the forefront of translational Alzheimer's disease (AD) research. You will work in an excellent international working environment, with national and international collaborations, and possibilities to publish in high impact journals.

We are a multidisciplinary research team of clinical researchers, statisticians, machine learning researchers and engineers working to detect factors to prevent dementia and slow dementia progression. Professor Eriksdotter’s team also includes a group studying growth factors and dementia and collaborations with experimental laboratory research are encouraged. The new assistant professor should drive their own research line focusing on the kidney-dementia connection and will have access to our large datasets from SveDem-the Swedish Register for Dementia and Cognitive Disorders.

You will drive your own research line on the kidney-dementia connection using primarily epidemiological methods, but translational collaborations are encouraged. You are expected to independently design your own research project, seek funding, obtain data, and successfully drive projects to publication. A good ability to collaborate and communicate with other team members is a must. Some of the questions you will be exploring will be how kidney failure impacts the incidence and progression of dementia, how dementia impacts the treatment and progression of kidney failure and the role of these diseases in COVID-19.

The candidate will be expected to pursue independent research projects, write scientific articles in international journals, present research results at scientific conferences and for society, write and apply for own grants and tutor students in the research group.

The employment as Assistant Professor is time limited for 6 years with the right to apply for promotion to Senior Lecturer.

Eligibility requirements

Those eligible for employment as an Assistant Professor are individuals who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence. Preference should be given to those who were awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence no more than five years prior to the expiry of the application period for the position as assistant professor.

Those who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence earlier may however be considered if special grounds exist.

Special grounds refer to:

  • parental leave,
  • positions of trust in trade union organizations
  • mandatory service in the total defense forces
  • long-term illness
  • general medical internship (maximum 24 months)
  • specialist medical residency for clinically active professionals (maximum 24 months).

Ground, dates and extent must be clearly specified in the application and verified with relevant documentation.

An MD with clinical experience and a specialty in nephrology or cognitive medicine (neurology, geriatrics, or psychiatry) are required.

The successful candidate will also be expected to have high-quality scientific research and publications including reviews, have obtained national research grants in competition as main applicant and experience as supervisor of students.

Extensive experience of epidemiological research is required. Independence in designing, conducting and publishing epidemiological studies is expected.

The research is interdisciplinary and ability to collaborate and participate in networks are required as are excellent verbal and written documented skills in scientific English.

Documented experience of Swedish register research is also required.

Bases of assessment

  • The candidate will be evaluated based on her/his previous research experience of relevance to the tasks for the position, motivation and ability to collaborate.
  • Special emphasis will be placed on scientific skill.
  • Scientific expertise will be assessed through previous research experience and production, received funding for research and experience in supervising students.
  • We will also base the assessment on the proposed research plan.
  • Knowledge and/or experience of regulations for Swedish register research and routines (obtaining ethics and databases) is an advantage.
  • Experience of working with different large databases that are merged is an advantage.
