Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

Do you want to develop, and apply, methods for evaluating the diagnostic ability of artificial intelligence (AI) in breast cancer? In collaboration between Karolinska Institutet, Lund University, Linköping University and the Swedish Breast Cancer Association, a project is underway with the aim of establishing a national platform for validating and evaluating the accuracy and reliability of commercial and academic AI algorithms in the detection and diagnosis of breast cancer based on mammography images. The project is called VAI-B (validation of AI in breast radiology) and is funded by the Regional Cancer Centers in Collaboration and by Sweden’s Innovation Agency, Vinnova. The goal is for VAI-B to facilitate a safe and optimized introduction of AI methods in mammography and breast cancer care. Our research group is part of the Department of Oncology and Pathology at Karolinska Institutet, and the research leader Fredrik Strand is a breast radiologist at Karolinska University Hospital.

Our research

We have internationally well-established research for the development and evaluation of AI for radiological breast cancer diagnosis. Our group has expertise in radiology, biostatistics and machine learning. In addition, we have a strong collaboration with research groups at KTH. Our international collaborations include the University of Cambridge, Harvard University and New York University.

We are now looking for a postdoctoral researcher to be responsible for developing, performing, and reporting, statistical analyzes, evaluations, and comparisons of external AI algorithms.

Your mission

In collaboration with the rest of the team, you will be responsible for quality assurance of the curation of register data and radiological images from various information owners in Sweden. You will be responsible for developing and performing statistical analyzes regarding the accuracy of the installed AI algorithms compared to registered cancer diagnoses and compared with the radiologists' assessments. We expect you to handle our aggregate database of clinical outcome data, radiological assessments and AI predictions. This could involve modifying or writing Python scripts to make queries, as well as statistical scripts to perform the analyzes. You are also responsible for reporting results in scientific journals as well as to the hospital and AI developers who are connected to the platform. If you are interested, there is opportunity to develop your own models, such as meta-models that can predict which AI algorithm would work best in a particular case.

As part of contributing to the validation methodology at European level, we have established contact with the University of Cambridge and the Scotland Breast Screening Program. We want to be a leading player in a European, and international, discussion about the introduction of AI algorithms in breast diagnostics.

Your profile

Are you a person who wants to make a big impact in terms of improved breast cancer diagnosis in Sweden and internationally? We are looking for a curious, well-organized and communicative person who has recently defended their dissertation, or will soon do, in biostatistics, biomedicine, medicine, medical technology, medical physics or computer science.

You will have:

  • - experience from linking different datasets from various sources, and working with large datasets
  • - written advanced scripts to perform statistical analyzes in, for example, Stata or R
  • - experience of, or interest in learning database administration, especially regarding MongoDB
  • - very good communication skills in both writing and speaking, in English, and preferably also in Swedish

It is a merit if:

  • - you have experience of summarizing research results in writing to authorities, colleagues or the general public
  • - you have an interest in cooperating internationally
  • - you have a strong motivation to improve breast cancer care
  • - you have been the lead author of an article published in a reputable medical journal
  • - experience of writing Python scripts
  • - you have experience with in-depth learning frameworks such as Pytorch
  • - your previous research has involved AI algorithms, medical diagnostics, or images

We are primarily looking for a postdoctoral researcher, but we welcome you to apply regardless if you feel that you would be excellent for the task.

Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence. It is considered as an advantage if you have completed your doctoral degree within the last three years, if there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) date of employment. This must be substantiated by the applicant's main supervisor, director or equivalent.
