The Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM) is a department at Karolinska Institutet and an interdisciplinary research institution within the broad field of environmental medicine. IMM conducts research within the areas of environmental and occupational medicine, toxicology, physiology, epidemiology, and biostatistics with the aim to clarify how environmental and lifestyle factors affect our health and which role genes have. IMM also serves as a scientific advisor to public authorities within the area of environmental medicine and IMM scientists participate in national and international expert groups. 

The position is located at the Unit of Biochemical Toxicology at IMM. The Unit of Biochemical Toxicology at IMM performs molecular studies of chemical carcinogenesis. 

Your mission

The applicant is required to conduct experimental research in the areas of chemical-induced DNA damage and inflammatory signaling. The applicant is also expected to conduct interdisciplinary work such as biochemical analysis of human samples. Furthermore, participation in teaching in toxicology at IMM is expected.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as a Research Specialist, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated research expertise as well as have documented research experience after defending their doctoral dissertation.

In addition to these requirements, the application must have:
•    Previous experience working as a postdoc or other work position that generated equivalent experience
•    Demonstrated ability to communicate both verbally and in text
•    Demonstrated ability to author scientific articles
•    Demonstrated ability to analyze human ex-vivo sample data sets
•    Demonstrated ability to summarize literature, for example by using text-mining tools for mode-of-action analysis
•    In-depth knowledge of human physiology, pathology, and environmental diseases
•    Experience in working with interdisciplinary research projects
•    Experience in teaching in toxicology is expected

Additional skills that are especially meritorious for the position:

•    Experience of research concerning chemical-induced DNA damage and inflammatory signaling 
•    Experience of culturing and working with human stem cells
•    Experience analyzing DNA repair and DNA damage signaling using biochemical assays (such as Western blots, Comet assay etc.) and confocal microscopy
•    Experience of experimental work with particle toxicology using human cell culture models
