Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Center for Translational Microbiome Research (CTMR) started in January 2016 as a collaboration between Karolinska Institutet, Science for Life Laboratory (SciLifeLab) and Ferring Pharmaceuticals. The centre builds on a deep understanding of translational microbiome research and has established a broad technical, biological, clinical and epidemiological platform for studying complex microbiological communities in well-defined human materials. The centre aims at creating a scientific translational environment with a broad interdisciplinary approach to the interface between clinical epidemiology and the microbiological, immunological and genetic aspects of the human microbiome and its association to health and disease. Lars Engstrand’s culturomics team focuses now in moving forward with our knowledge and expertise in gut microbiome studies and aims to optimize the culturomics techniques and technological process development for microbiome-based therapeutics.

Your mission

The employment is focused on research within the gut microbiome area. The successful candidate will conduct research within the culturomics team in their projects for developing cutting edge tools for microbiome therapy development.

The focus of the study is within the utilization of FACS and the handling of immune cells to assist in developing in vitro model assays. The applicant will work on the in vitro phenotyping of isolated and genetically-modified bacteria in bacteria-cell interactions, to understand their immunoregulatory capacity and relevant pathways, and analyze results under supervision. The position as a research assistant is expected to have a good grasp of wet lab experimentation in microbiology and molecular biology, and can document their results in an organized manner, according to early pre-GMP standards. The position is temporary for 12 months.

Your profile

Eligibility for employment as a research assistant requires an MSc in biology or related field or be willing to perform your master thesis based on the results of the work projects. Given the broad spectrum of the projects, it is meritorious for the student to have experience from various microbiology and immunology laboratory work, including molecular biology techniques relevant to these fields. Proven and or documented cell and bacteria culture work in projects is a must.

We would like to invite highly motivated young scientists with the enthusiasm for science and would enjoy our fast-paced environment. Good collaborative and troubleshooting skills are a must.
