Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM) is a department at Karolinska Institutet and an interdisciplinary research institution within the broad field of environmental medicine. IMM conducts cutting edge research within the areas of environmental and occupational medicine, toxicology, physiology, epidemiology, and biostatistics, with the aim to clarify how environmental and lifestyle factors affect our health and which role genes have.

At the Unit of System Toxicology we focus on how environmental exposures, including nanomaterials, chemicals and microorganisms impact on epithelial barrier function and immune resilience. Our aim is to uncover mechanisms which link environmental exposures with the development of chronic inflammatory disease.

Your mission

The employment has a focus on research. The successful candidate will conduct research within the study “The role of skin and skin microbiota in disease triggered by environmental chemicals”. The specific aim of the study is to clarify the function of the skin and the skin microbiota for uptake and subsequent health effects of environmental chemicals. Your task will be to isolate and culture bacteria, perform toxicity assays and analysis of metabolites, as well as to prepare study subject samples for amplicon sequencing, and analyze the results under supervision. The position as a research assistant is temporary for 12 months.

Your profile

To be eligible for employment as a research assistant, you must have a MSc in biology or a related field, or alternatively be willing to perform your master thesis based on the results produced by this study. It is meritorious to have experience from laboratory work, especially regarding aseptic techniques needed in a microbiology laboratory, profiling of chemical compounds by HPLC, sample preparation for DNA extraction and performing PCR and gel runs. Moreover, it is a merit to be familiar with biostatistics and other analyses performed on the R platform.

We are looking for a person who enjoys working with science and with us. Good collaborative skills and the ability to work independently and in an organized manner is a must.
