The Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM) is a department at Karolinska Institutet and an interdisciplinary research institution within the broad field of environmental medicine. IMM conducts cutting edge research within the areas of environmental and occupational medicine, toxicology, physiology, epidemiology, and biostatistics with the aim to clarify how environmental and lifestyle factors affect our health and which role genes have. IMM also serves as a scientific advisor to public authorities within the area of environmental medicine and IMM scientists participate in national and international expert groups.

Your mission

The candidate will be able to work on epidemiologic research, with an emphasis on occupational exposures and cardiovascular outcomes, including pregnancy-induced cardiovascular disease as well as myocardial infarction and stroke. The research is based on data from the Swedish population registers and quality registers.

The work will consist of responsibilities and tasks, such as:

  • Planning and leading a research project
  • Producing scientific publications and communicating research
  • Working with and developing job exposure matrices
  • Applying for research funding from external sources
  • Organizing journal clubs for doctoral students
  • Contribute to the unit’s teaching responsibilities when needed.
  • Initiating and participating in collaborations with regional and national authorities and researcher groups.

The employment as Assistant Professor is time limited for 4 years with the right to apply for promotion to Senior Lecturer.

Eligibility requirements

Those eligible for employment as an Assistant Professor are individuals who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence. Preference should be given to those who were awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence no more than five years prior to the expiry of the application period for the position as assistant professor.

Those who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence earlier may however be considered if special grounds exist. 

Special grounds refer to:

  • parental leave,
  • positions of trust in trade union organizations
  • mandatory service in the total defense forces
  • long-term illness
  • general medical internship (maximum 24 months)
  • specialist medical residency for clinically active professionals (maximum 24 months).

Ground, dates and extent must be clearly specified in the application and verified with relevant documentation.

Bases of assessment

Scientific expertise will be most important when assessing applicants. Research experience in occupational epidemiology, publication of manuscripts in peer-reviewed scientific journals, and external funding are key to be successful in this role.

The successful applicant must have:

• A doctoral degree in epidemiology or similar
• Considerable experience in handling and management of large databases and excellent data management skills
• Advanced knowledge in statistical software such as SAS, STAT, R or similar
• A proven track record of attracting external funding within occupational medicine
• Experience with working with Swedish register data
• Knowledge in cardiovascular outcomes in both general and pregnant populations
• An interest in return to work after cardiovascular disease
• Experience in the use of job exposure matrices and knowledge of the Swedish occupational coding system

Competences, skills, and experiences considered meritorious:

• Excellent writing skills and command of written and spoken English, intermediate comprehension of Swedish is a plus
• Knowledge of common chemical and occupational exposures, such as noise, vibrations, physical load, and job strain
• Formal pedagogical training
• Experience in leading and supervising doctoral students

Particular assessment for promotion to Senior Lecturer

An Assistant Professor employed in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4 Section 12a shall be promoted to Senior Lecturer if he or she is eligible for an employment as Senior Lecturer in accordance with the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet and is assessed to be suitable for such employment in accordance with the assessment criteria that KI has decided should be applied when being promoted to Senior Lecturer. The assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet that was valid at the time of appointment as Assistant Professor will be applied when applying for promotion to Senior Lecturer. Current assessment criteria is found here. Such promotion results in a permanent position as Senior Lecturer.
