Karolinska Institutet

- with focus on research

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics (MBB) is one of 22 departments at Karolinska Institutet, and consists of twelve divisions and about 270 employees. We pursue world-class research particularly focused on discovering the mechanisms that cause disease, comprising the areas of biochemistry, physiological chemistry, biomaterials, functional genomics, genome biology, inflammation, metabolism, molecular neurobiology, structural biology, chemical biology and vascular biology. We are located at Biomedicum, an exciting new environment where five of KI’s departments are co-located.

Description of the subject area

The subject is vascular biology, comprising blood and lymphatic circulation. The focus should be on understanding mechanisms of the development and homeostasis of the vascular systems, as well as mechanisms of diseases involving vasculature. The subject comprises the use of molecular methods, genetically engineered model organisms, advanced imaging, and models of human tissues (e.g. organoids, tissue explants) to discover mechanisms of vascular development and disease. Special emphasis should be placed on discovering fundamental mechanisms that advance our understanding of human vascular biology, and that may lead to treatments of vascular disorders.

Your mission

The employment has a focus on research. The successful applicant will pursue internationally leading, independent research in vascular biology, teaching in preclinical subjects at the undergraduate and graduate levels, supervision of doctoral and postdoctoral students, and be engaged in the development of the department and KI as a whole. The professor is expected to act as principal investigator with delegated responsibility for grants, staff, work environment and other administrative duties at the department. Collaboration with other groups at the department, at KI and internationally, as well as outreach to the general society, are expected.

The new professor is expected to be active and world-leading in vascular biology as evidenced by high-quality publications that have had substantial impact on the field. They are expected to be engaged in collaborations nationally and internationally, pursuing fundamental biological and/or disease-related questions. Such activities could be evident e.g. by positions of trust in international organizations or consortia, or by participation in larger international collaborations.

The professor must have very substantial ongoing funding through grants obtained in competition, and is expected to pursue research at such a level that future significant funding can be ensured, sufficient to support the professor through activity-dependent resource allocation.

Assessment criteria

For employment as Professor at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure 3.1.1 are applied in relation to established profile of employment.

It is particularly meritorious that the applicant has shown

  • A strong and independent line of research, sustained over time, leading to important discoveries in thee field of vascular biology
  • A strong publication record, including influential papers published as senior author

It is meritorious that the applicant has shown

  • Invitations as speaker to recognized international scientific meetings
  • Prizes and awards based on scientific excellence
  • A track record of substantial and sustained funding from competitive external grants

The applicant shall also have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education (or have equivalent competence), as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution. If the person appointed for the position is lacking such education at the time of the employment, the appointee must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
