The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 540 employees and a revenue 2023 of 530 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.
The Division of Neurogeriatrics consists of about 65 employees. The division conducts experimental and translational research related primarily to Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative diseases, but also more general molecular mechanisms with biomedical relevance are studied. The division is mainly located in BioClinicum, KI Campus Solna, and partially in Neo, KI Campus Flemingsberg.
Our research group (PI: Maria Ankarcrona) investigates molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying mitochondrial dysfunction and neuronal cell death in Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative disorders. The group works in an inspiring and interactive research environment in BioClinicum, KI-Campus Solna and has on-going collaborative projects with national and international research groups.
The position will include responsibilities in projects regarding mitochondrial functions and endoplasmic reticulum-mitochondria interplay in neurodegenerative disorders. The candidate will form his/her research line and be involved in all parts of the projects ranging from planning and performing experimental work to project and data management, and dissemination of results. You will interact closely with other members of the research group and supervise doctoral students and master’s students in their projects. The position also involves teaching assignments on advanced- and doctoral education level.
The employment as Assistant Professor is time limited for 6 years with the right to apply for promotion to Senior Lecturer.
Those eligible for employment as an Assistant Professor are individuals who have been awarded a PhD in Medical Sciences or Health Sciences. Preference should be given to those who were awarded a PhD no more than five years prior to the expiry of the application period for the position as assistant professor.

Special grounds refer to:
Ground, dates and extent must be clearly specified in the application and verified with relevant documentation.
Candidates must have finished a postdoctoral period and is expected to have a background in neurobiology and neurodegeneration with good knowledge of the nervous system, bioenergetics, and mitochondria. The candidate should also have experience with biochemical and cell biological methods detecting mitochondrial functions, dynamics as well as primary neuronal cultures and animal work. That includes previous knowledge on live and fixed confocal imaging and electron microscopy, protein, and gene expression analysis, respirometry assays or equivalent with cells or isolated mitochondria, and behavior analysis. Proven interest on exploring targets for therapeutic intervention and mitochondrial motility will be highly recommended. Candidates should demonstrate potential to obtain research funding, well documented scientific production, and interest in teaching. Candidates must be able to work independently, take own initiatives, have good collaborative skills, demonstrate good leadership qualities, be socially competent and be fluent in written and spoken English.
Scientific expertise will be most important when assessing applicants.
