Karolinska Institutet, Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society

The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 540 employees and a revenue 2023 of 530 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.

The Division of Neurogeriatrics consists of about 65 employees. The division conducts experimental and translational research related primarily to Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative diseases, but also more general molecular mechanisms with biomedical relevance are studied. The division is mainly located in BioClinicum, KI Campus Solna, and partially in Neo, KI Campus Flemingsberg.

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Division of Neurogeriatrics perform research on different aspects of Alzheimer’s disease from molecules to patients. Our research group (PI: Maria Ankarcrona) investigates molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying mitochondrial dysfunction and neuronal cell death in Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative disorders. The group works in an inspiring and interactive research environment in BioClinicum, KI-Campus Solna and has on-going collaborative projects with national and international research groups.

Your mission

The postdoctoral position will include involvement in projects regarding mitochondrial functions and endoplasmic reticulum-mitochondria interplay in neurodegenerative disorders. The postdoc will be involved in all parts of the projects ranging from planning and performing experimental work to project and data management, and dissemination of results.

Your profile

Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate in Medical Sciences or Health Sciences. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) date of employment. This must be substantiated by the applicant's main supervisor, director or equivalent.

The candidate is expected to have a background in neurobiology and neurodegeneration with good knowledge of the nervous system and mitochondria-endoplasmic reticulum contacts. The candidate should also have experience with electron microscopy, biochemical and cell biological methods as well as familiarity with primary neuronal cultures. That includes previous knowledge on quantifying live and fixed confocal imaging, electron micrographs quantification and protein expression analysis. Proven interest on exploring targets for therapeutic intervention in neurodegeneration, together with excellent skills in grant writing, manuscript preparation and oral presentations will be considered highly desirable. Applicants must be able to work independently, be proactive, have good collaborative skills, be socially competent and be fluent in written and spoken English.
