This position is a unique opportunity to conduct research in the two research groups Global Sexual Health, Department of Global Public Health, and Global Reproductive Health, Department of Women’s and Children’s Health.
The Department of Global Public Health is an interdisciplinary institution that aims to advance knowledge on how to improve population health at local, national and global level. Research at the department aims to identify the determinants of health, develop and evaluate individual and structural interventions, and provide evidence for guidelines and policy documents. Many of the department's researchers are scientific advisors to authorities and other decision-makers at regional, national and international level. The department has 9 research groups, about 85 research students and about 140 employees.
The Department of Women’s and Children’s Health is organized in 8 divisions dealing with both basic experimental and clinical science. The divisions have separate scientific profiles and vary in size and number of research groups. We have a strong pedagogic focus with several programs at graduate and postgraduate level. Our WHO collaborating centre for research and research training in human reproduction and sexual and reproductive health is located within the division of neonatology, obstetrics and gynecology.
The work will mostly be based at the Department of Global Public Health and the WHO centre, Department of Women’s and Children’s Health at Karolinska Institutet in Solna. The applicant is expected to independently conduct own research but also to assist in existing research projects in global health in low- and middle-income countries, and also register-based research in Sweden. Responsibilities include writing of grant applications, project coordination, project reporting, quantitative data analysis, scientific writing and frequent communication in speech and writing with both national and international partners. Supervision of students at Master and PhD level will also be expected to a lesser extent, as well as teaching in global health and sexual and reproductive health depending on the knowledge and experience of the applicant. The post-doc will also be an important part of the research group and is expected to actively participate in the work and development of the research groups. Shorter or longer travel outside of Sweden primarily to Africa might be necessary. This is a fixed-term position during two years.
Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) date of employment. This must be substantiated by the applicant's main supervisor, director or equivalent.
Mandatory requirements include a PhD degree in epidemiology, public health, global health or corresponding academic qualifications. English and Swedish language skills in speaking and writing is a mandatory requirement. Skills in data analysis, biostatistics, epidemiology, medicine are mandatory requirements. Experience of research in global health and sexual and reproductive health and/or HIV is a desired requirement as well as previous work in low-income countries. Experience in writing publications, grant applications and/or project coordination preferably at international level is a desired requirement.
We are looking for an independent, proactive and positive person with a sense of responsibility and with previous experience of working with researchers and other staff from different countries and cultures. Medical background is an advantage but not a requirement.
