The epidemiological research at the Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM) is focused on advancing knowledge about disease etiology and prognosis with an emphasis on environmental and lifestyle factors, and on methodological development and stringency. We conduct research including comparative effectiveness research, with an emphasis on causal inference methods for complex longitudinal data from both observational studies and randomized trials, e.g., to assess effects of interventions on cardiovascular disease, cancer, and others. The research is based on the unique resource of Swedish and Nordic nationwide population registers and clinical registries as well as cohorts and case-control studies with extensive information from questionnaires and biological samples.

Your mission

The Assistant Professor will independently develop, refine, and implement comparative effectiveness research, with an emphasis on causal inference methods for complex longitudinal data from both observational studies and randomized trials, e.g., to assess effects of interventions on cardiovascular disease, cancer, and others. The research will mainly be based on real-world data from Swedish population and health data registers, also including health care quality registers. The work will consist of responsibilities and tasks, such as:
• Having project responsibility and developing an independent line of research.
• Producing scientific publications, communicating research, creating tutorials and open-source code.
• Applying for research funding.
• Teaching and supervising on all levels, i.e., Bachelor's, Master’s, and Doctoral Level, as well as on Postdoctoral level.
• Organizing workshops and seminars.
• Initiating and participating in national and international collaborations.

The employment as Assistant Professor is time limited for 4 years with the right to apply for promotion to Senior Lecturer.

Eligibility requirements

Those eligible for employment as an Assistant Professor are individuals who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence. Preference should be given to those who were awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence no more than five years prior to the expiry of the application period for the position as assistant professor.
Those who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence earlier may however be considered if special grounds exist.

Special grounds refer to:
• parental leave,
• positions of trust in trade union organizations
• mandatory service in the total defense forces
• long-term illness
• general medical internship (maximum 24 months)
• specialist medical residency for clinically active professionals (maximum 24 months).

Ground, dates and extent must be clearly specified in the application and verified with relevant documentation.

Bases of assessment

Scientific expertise in the area of epidemiology and causal inference methods will be most important when assessing applicants, which will be assessed through research experience and production (published articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals, accepted or completed manuscripts), and received funding for research in competition.

To be eligible, the applicant must have:
• A doctoral degree in epidemiology.
• A formal education in epidemiology, statistics, or mathematics.
• Considerable experience in handling large databases, excellent data management skills and a solid knowledge of common statistical software, as a minimum R and Stata.
• A proven track record in application and refinement of causal inference methods, such as the target trial framework, and methods including transportability and generalizability and g-methods and competing event methodology.

Competences, skills, and experiences considered meritorious:
• Excellent writing skills and excellent command of written and spoken English.
• Experience in supervising of doctoral students.
• Formal pedagogical training.
• Experience in teaching and organizing workshops and seminars.
• Established international research collaborations.

Particular assessment for promotion to Senior Lecturer

An Assistant Professor employed in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4 Section 12a shall be promoted to Senior Lecturer if he or she is eligible for an employment as Senior Lecturer in accordance with the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet and is assessed to be suitable for such employment in accordance with the assessment criteria that KI has decided should be applied when being promoted to Senior Lecturer. The assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet that was valid at the time of appointment as Assistant Professor will be applied when applying for promotion to Senior Lecturer. Current assessment criteria is found here. Such promotion results in a permanent position as Senior Lecturer.
