- with focus on research
The Department of Physiology and Pharmacology (FyFa) conducts education and research in physiology, pharmacology, anaesthesiology and intensive care at a high international level. The Department has 400 employees, 30 research groups and 90 doctoral students. We offer a dynamic teaching environment in newly renovated premises and a creative research environment in the newly built Biomedicum on Campus Solna. The research activities at the Department include the subject areas cellular signaling, cardiovascular and respiratory systems, neuropsychopharmacology, neuroinflammation, pharmacogenetics, regenerative medicine, renal physiology, anaesthesiology and intensive care, muscle physiology and pain. Our collaboration with Clinical departments at Karolinska University Hospital provides unique opportunities for translational research in our subjects. More information about our research can be found here.
Drug treatment is often problematic. In many areas of therapy, only 40-50% of the treated patients respond satisfactorily to the drug treatment and drug side effects are common; 7% of all hospitalizations (20% in the elderly) are due to side effects. There is thus a great need to optimize and individualize drug therapy.
Translational pharmacology aims to bridge the gap between basic molecular research studies and clinical drug development and treatment. A challenge in the subject area is to improve the clinical effect of established and potential drugs based on the patient's genetic background. Thus, the research area includes implementing results of molecular pharmacological research in drug development and clinics, with a focus on the patient's conditions. An optimization of drug development and streamlining of clinical drug treatment entails lower costs and improved clinical effect. The employment shall thus aim to, on the basis of human model systems, develop new tools for a future successful individualisation of drug treatment. This may include the development of new human in vitro models, such as organoids, that mimics the in vivo situation in humans, the identification of new mechanisms, receptor systems and mediators important for predicting the effects of drugs and the identification of new biomarkers for individualized drug treatment.
This employment is focused on research that aims to develop organ systems that mimics the in vivo situation in humans, hence identifying factors that can lead to more effective individualized drug treatment.
The main tasks consist of research, postgraduate education and teaching related to the subject of pharmacology. The research must be conducted in areas that are relevant for translating basic research results for use in drug development and in the clinics.
It is expected that the holder takes responsibility for the management of their research group and conducts research at the highest international level. Furthermore, the holder is expected to be active in postgraduate education by supervising postgraduate students and arranging postgraduate studies as well as to participate in undergraduate education and especially in advanced level education, e.g. within the newly started master's program in Translational Physiology and Pharmacology, led by our department. Through active research and efforts in science, postgraduate education and teaching, the applicant is expected to contribute to the development of pharmacological research at Karolinska Institutet.
To be eligible for an employment as Professor with focus on research the applicant must have demonstrated good pedagogical expertise; excellent scientific expertise and management, development and collaborative skills (see the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).
Documented experience of high-quality research in translational pharmacology is a requirement. Thus, the applicant must be an internationally leading researcher in these aspects of pharmacology with high-quality publications in leading international journals for the past eight years. Furthermore, applicants must show a potential to continue as a leading international researcher in the field.
The applicant must have received significant research funding as a research leader from national and international funding bodies over the past five years and show a clear potential for continued and expanded funding in the field of research.
Documented supervision of doctoral students and postdocs, as well as demonstrable teaching experience, experience of management and development assignments and documentation of management training is a requirement.
The Professorship has a focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: scientific expertise (3), pedagogical expertise (1) and leadership, development and collaboration expertise (2).
For employment as Professor at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure 3.1.1 are applied in relation to established profile of employment.
It is particularly meritorious that the applicant has shown documented experience of development of in vitro models for pharmacological studies relevant to the in vivo situation in humans.
The applicant shall also have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education (or have equivalent competence), as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution. If the person appointed for the position is lacking such education at the time of the employment, the appointee must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.
After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
A creative and inspiring environment with wide-ranging expertise and interests. Karolinska Institutet is one of the world's leading medical universities.
